Abstract Spin glasses are magnetic systems in which the interactions are random and competing. The ordering in these systems poses basic conceptual problems and remains incompletely understood despite intensive study. Hyperfine interaction techniques (Mössbauer, μSR, NMR, NO and PAC) have been used to obtain information on spin glasses, particularly on the relaxation at short time scales. A review of the data will be presented and a physical picture will be given of spin glass ordering in terms of the diffusion of the point presenting the system in eigenstate space.
