Notes: Abstract The fungal density of one hundred and forty-eight samples of sands obtained from forty-two Spanish Mediterranean littoral beaches are investigated. The CFU/g number ranged from 15 and 76×105. The most commonly isolated genera were: Penicillium, Cladosporium, Aspergillus, Acremonium, Alternaria, Fusarium. The keratinophilic capacity of all the isolated fungal strains was also determined.

Notes: Abstract An ultrastructural study was performed on Arthrinium aureum. The fungi were treated with glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxide fixation. The hypha and conidia has a concentric membrane system which consisted of multiple membranes of a myelinoid appearance, and continued to the conidia and hypha plasma membrane. The fungi were also treated with periodic acid-alkaline bismuth (PABi) staining after glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxide fixation. PABi positive materials were found on the marginal glycogen granules, the concentric membrane system and the conidia plasma membrane.

Notes: Abstract 97 soils samples of Tarragona city and outskirts were analysed. We were isolated the following keratinophilic fungi: Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton ajelloi, Ctenomyces serratus, Malbranchea state of C. uncinatus, Chrysosporium tropicum, Chrysosporium evolceanui, Chrysosporium asperatum, Chrysosporium pruinosum (?), Auxarthron thaxteri, Gymnoascus petalosporus, Gymnoascus reesii, Chaetomium murorum, Chaetomium spirale and Chaetomium sp. On explaine the distribution of different isolated species.

Notes: Abstract The ability of 17 strains of Epidermophyton to perforate hair in vitro using the Ajello & Georg's test procedure and a modification of Lu's method has been studied. Following the Ajello & Georg's test procedure only E. stockdaleae perforated hair. Sporadically some strains of E. floccosum perforated horse hair. We noted as well unusual perforations originated from inside to outside of the hair. By the other technique, all strains, excepting E. floccosum var. nigricans in child hair, perforated hair. E. floccosum showed these perforations later than E. stockdaleae.

Notes: Abstract Experimental dermatophytoses were tested in guinea pigs by 17 strains of genus Epidermophyton. Only three strains of E. floccosum produced lesions. These lesions were detected 5–7 d after inoculation, and no crust formation or alopecia was observed. These lesions were also studied using microbiological and histopathological techniques. No infection occurred after cutaneous application of E. floccosum var. nigricans and E. stockdaleae.

Notes: Abstract Quantitative and qualitative studies were made of the fungi of the air in Barcelona City. The genera Cladosporium and Alternaria formed two of the most important components of the fungus population studied during a two-year period running from January 1976 through January 1978. Penicillium species formed the 16.3 % of the total colonies while Aspergillus species represented only the 2.8 %. The occurrence of these genera was greatly affected by climatic conditions. An attempt was made to summariza the data of various kinds of fungi on a volumetric basis. Most of the fungi reported here have been identified as far as genera.

Notes: Abstract The morphology of conidia in 211 species and 12 varieties belonging to the genus Penicillium Link ex Gray have been studied and compared. According to surface ornamentation, conidia have been classified into six groups: A, smooth-walled (7% of the species); B, delicately roughened (13%); C, warty (28%); D, echinate (10%); E, striate with low irregular ridges (36%); and F, striate with scarce high ridges or bars (6%). Whereas the first two groups are closely related in both shape and average size, a gradual reduction was observed in size and in the length/width (l/w) ratio in the remaining groups. Echinate conidia were globose, having the largest average size. Only four species produced conidia not surpassing 2 μm in diameter. Maximum length observed was 8 μm, and most elongated conidia had a l/w ratio of 3.5. Forty per cent of the species studied had globose conidia. Conidia of the monoverticillate species were generally smaller, more globose and frequently with ridges. In the Asymmetrica, the conidia were generally larger, and showed ridges in comparatively few species. Conidia of the Symmetrica, which were frequently striate with ridges, presented the most elongated forms. The largest average size was found in the conidia of the Polyverticillata which were generally warty. Finally, we have considered the variations in surface ornamentation of conidia during the evolution of the genus Penicillium and drawn attention to their possible relationship with certain habitats and ways of conidial dispersion.
