    Description: CAIRNS, S. D., 2000. A revision of the shallow-water azooxanthellate Scleractinia of the western Atlantic. Studies Nat. Hist. Caribbean Region 75, Amsterdam, 2000: 1-231. This paper constitutes the second of a two part revision of the western Atlantic azooxanthellate Scleractinia \xe2\x80\x94 this part addressing the taxonomy and distribution of the 73 species known to occur at depths shallower than 183 m within the tropical and warm temperate realm. Of this number, 27 species occur exclusively shallower than 183 m; these are fully described, figured, and mapped. The remaining 46 species are also known to occur at depths greater than 183 m, most of those species treated more fully in part 1 (CAIRNS 1979). Lists are also provided of the azooxanthellate species that occur exclusively deeper than 183 m (56 species) as well as the western Atlantic zooxanthellate fauna (65 species), resulting in the first comprehensive list of all 192 western Adantic scleractinian species. In the western Atlantic there are approximately twice as many azooxanthellate as zooxanthellate species. One species, Tubastraea coccinea is considered to be introduced; its distribution and chronology of its possible dispersal are mapped and discussed. Approximately 6900 specimens (1100 lots) were examined, collected from over 550 stations. Additional records of all but three of the 73 species are reported herein. Ten species and one subspecies are described as new; ten new combinations are suggested. Among the 73 shallow-water species several patterns of distribution were discerned: widespread insular and continental, primarily insular, primarily continental, endemic to Brazil, and endemic to the Carolinian Province. The most common pattern, shared by 18 species, was a distribution that includes the entire tropical western Atlantic as well as the northern warm temperate region in the northern Gulf of Mexico and/or southeast coast of the US, these \xe2\x80\x98eurythermic tropical\xe2\x80\x99 species usually extending no farther than 34\xc2\xb030\' to 35\xc2\xb000\'N. Among the 27 exclusively shallow-water azooxanthellates, the percentage of species endemic to the western Atlantic (85%) and the amphi-Atlantic component (11%) were considerably higher and lower, respectively, than those components for the deeper water azooxanthellates, but virtually identical to that of the western Atlantic zooxanthellate corals.

    Description: Ahermatypic Seleractinia are very common throughout the tropical western Atlantic, both in number of species and individuals. Of the Scleractinia known from the western Atlantic, there are over twice as many species of ahermatypes (species that do not have symbiotic zooxanthellae) as hermatypes (the shallow-water \xe2\x80\x9creef corals,\xe2\x80\x9d all of which have zooxanthellae). This paper is a review of all known species of deep-water Scleractinia that occur in the Caribbean Sea and adjacent waters, all of which are ahermatypic. The term \xe2\x80\x9cdeep-water\xe2\x80\x9d is used here to designate depths equal to or greater than 200 meters; the 88 species treated all have bathymetric ranges that exceed 200 meters at their deepest points. Another 27 ahermatypic species are confined to the shallow water (0-200 m) of the Caribbean, and two species are known from off tropical Brazil but not the Caribbean, resulting in 117 species of tropical western Atlantic ahermatypes.\nThe only person to have comprehensively studied the deep-water western Atlantic corals was POURTAL\xc3\x88S, whose last publication was in 1880. In the ensuing century, large collections have accumulated and Scleractinian classification has been greatly modified. This review is based primarily on the large collections at the University of Miami (RSMAS), USNM, and MCZ.

    Description: A new genus, Pseudocrypthelia, is described to receive Cryptohelia pachypoma Hickson and England, 1905, a species known only from deep water off Halmahera, Indonesia. It clearly does not belong to the genus Calyptopora, as previously suggested, and differs from Crypthelia by having rudimentary gastrostyles. The gastrostyles of P. pachypoma are morphologically unique among the Stylasterina and are hypothesized to represent an independent acquisition of the structure and thus are considered to be analogous, not homologous, to other stylasterine gastrostyles. A table of characters is given for Calyptopora, Pseudocrypthelia, and Crypthelia.

    Description: Despite the abundance and ecological importance of octocorals in Alaskan waters, most of the species in this assemblage remain unidentified and/or undescribed. One of the largest and most abundant species from the Aleutian Islands found at depths ranging between 125 and 512 m is a new and very unusual gorgonian coral. It has stout upright colonies that are laterally branched, with thick, more or less clavate terminal branches. Its major distinguishing characteristic is its possession of tiny sclerites with stubby double heads, which occur in the outermost coenenchyme. Another significant character is its oval capstans with elaborate ornamentation. The gorgonian is described as Alaskagorgia aleutiana new genus and species (Cnidaria: Octocorallia: Holaxonia: Plexauridae). It is described and assigned to Plexauridae because of the affinity of DNA sequences (1337 bp mtDNA: ND2 and MSH1) of A. aleutiana with other plexaurid corals, even though the predominant coenenchymal sclerites are somewhat smaller and different than is usual in plexaurid genera.

    Description: A new species of azooxanthellate Scleractinia, Sphenotrochus denhartogi, is described from the Late Miocene (Tortonian, Navidad Formation) of Chile. Comparisons are made to three other closely related species which, based on their distinctive costal morphology, form a species complex: S. claibornensis, S. senni, S. denhartogi, and S. auritus. This is the first record of Sphenotrochus from the west coast of South America.

    Description: A new genus and species of azooxanthellate solitary coral, Monohedotrochus capitolii, are described in the subfamily Caryophylliinae, based on 42 specimens, most collected off Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul states, southern Brazil. The new genus is characterized by being solitary and attached, having a monocyclic base, hexamerally arranged septa in four or five cycles, lacking paliform lobes and having a papillose columella.     Description: A new species of stylasterid coral, Distichopora vervoorti, is described from shallow water off Bali, Indonesia. Although similar to D. irregularis in having meandering pore rows, it differs from that species in colony and branch shape, coenosteal colour, and expression of the ampullae.
