    Description: The disordered-molecular-alloy phase (DMA) of ammonia hydrates [J. S. Loveday and R. J. Nelmes, Phys. Rev. Lett. 83 , 4329 (1999)] is unique in that it has substitutional disorder of ammonia and water over the molecular sites of a body centred cubic lattice. Whilst this structure has been observed in ammonia di- and mono-hydrate compositions, it has not been conclusively observed in the ammonia hemihydrate system. This work presents investigations of the structural behaviour of ammonia hemihydrate as a function of P and T. The indications of earlier studies [Ma et al. RSC Adv. 2 , 4290 (2012)] that the DMA structure could be produced by compression of ammonia hemihydrate above 20 GPa at ambient temperature are confirmed. In addition, the DMA structure was found to form reversibly both from the melt, and on warming of ammonia hemihydrate phase-II, in the pressure range between 4 and 8 GPa. The route used to make the DMA structure from ammonia mono- and di-hydrates—compression at 170 K to 6 GPa followed by warming to ambient temperature—was found not to produce the DMA structure for ammonia hemihydrate. These results provide the first strong evidence that DMA is a thermodynamically stable form. A high-pressure phase diagram for ammonia hemihydrate is proposed which has importance for planetary modelling.

    Notes: SUMMARY: The terpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons in celery essential oil that was recovered by two different methods were separated from the oxygen containing materials by column chromatography and analyzed by temperature-programmed gas chromatography. The essential oils were prepared from celery puree by a batch distillation procedure, and by vaporization in a Votator Turba-Film evaporator and rectification of the vapors in a packed distillation column. The terpenes α-pinene, β-pinene, myrcene, limonene, γ-terpinene and cymene; and the sesquiterpenes β-elemene, β-caryophyllene, α- and β-humulene and β-selinene were identified as constituents of the essential oils. The qualitative and quantitative relationships of the hydrocarbons between the two different oils were established and discussed.

    Notes: SUMMARY: The alcohols in celery essential oil obtained from fresh celery by two essence recovery methods were separated by gas chromatography and identified by spectroscopic methods. Thirteen alcohols were reported. Twelve of the 13 alcohols have not been previously reported as constituents of celery essential oil. A semiquantitative estimation of each constituent was made.

    Description: Computer-based Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) models were carried out to compare lightweight composites with the traditional aluminium over their useful lifetime. The analysis included raw materials, production, useful life in operation and disposal at the end of the material's useful life. The carbon fibre epoxy resin composite could in some cases reduce the weight of a component by up to 40 % compared to aluminium. As the fuel consumption of an aircraft is strongly influenced by its total weight, the emissions can be significantly reduced by increasing the proportion of composites used in the aircraft structure. Higher emissions, compared to aluminium, produced during composites production meet their 'break even' point after certain number of time units when used in aircraft structures, and continue to save emissions over their long-term operation.     Description: Hedgehog (Hh) signalling is essential for several aspects of embryogenesis. In Drosophila, Hh transduction is mediated by a cytoplasmic signalling complex that includes the putative serine-threonine kinase Fused (Fu) and the kinesin Costal 2 (Cos2, also known as Cos), yet Fu does not have a conserved role in Hh signalling in mammals. Mouse Fu (also known as Stk36) mutants are viable and seem to respond normally to Hh signalling. Here we show that mouse Fu is essential for construction of the central pair apparatus of motile, 9+2 cilia and offers a new model of human primary ciliary dyskinesia. We found that mouse Fu physically interacts with Kif27, a mammalian Cos2 orthologue, and linked Fu to known structural components of the central pair apparatus, providing evidence for the first regulatory component involved in central pair construction. We also demonstrated that zebrafish Fu is required both for Hh signalling and cilia biogenesis in Kupffer's vesicle. Mouse Fu rescued both Hh-dependent and -independent defects in zebrafish.
