    Description: In this paper, we study a family of solid-state, organic semiconductors for visible light communications. The star-shaped molecules have a boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) core with a range of side arm lengths which control the photophysical properties. The molecules emit red light with photoluminescence quantum yields ranging from 22% to 56%. Thin films of the most promising BODIPY molecules were used as a red colour converter for visible light communications. The film enabled colour conversion with a modulation bandwidth of 73 MHz, which is 16 times higher than that of a typical phosphor used in LED lighting systems. A data rate of 370 Mbit/s was demonstrated using On-Off keying modulation in a free space link with a distance of ∼15 cm.

    Description: Deposition of proteins of aberrant conformation is the hallmark of many neurodegenerative diseases. Misfolding of the normally globular mutant superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD1) is a central, early, but poorly understood event in the pathogenic cascade leading to familial forms of ALS. Here we report that aggregates composed of an ALS-causing SOD1 mutant penetrate inside cells by macropinocytosis and rapidly exit the macropinocytic compartment to nucleate aggregation of the cytosolic, otherwise soluble, mutant SOD1 protein. Once initiated, mutant SOD1 aggregation is self-perpetuating. Mutant SOD1 aggregates transfer from cell to cell with remarkable efficiency, a process that does not require contacts between cells but depends on the extracellular release of aggregates. This study reveals that SOD1 aggregates, propagate in a prion-like manner in neuronal cells and sheds light on the mechanisms underlying aggregate uptake and cell-to-cell transfer.

    Description: Abstract Climate sensitivity is a key metric used to assess the magnitude of global warming given increased CO2 concentrations. The geological past can provide insights into climate sensitivity; however, on timescales of millions of years, factors other than CO2 can drive climate, including paleogeographic forcing and solar luminosity. Here, through an ensemble of climate model simulations covering the period 150‐35 million years ago, we show that climate sensitivity to CO2 doubling varies between ~3.5‐5.5°C through this time. These variations can be explained as a non‐linear response to solar luminosity, evolving surface albedo due to changes in ocean area, and changes in ocean circulation. The work shows that the modern climate sensitivity is relatively low in the context of the geological record, as a result of relatively weak feedbacks due to a relatively low CO2 baseline, and the presence of ice and relatively small ocean area in the modern continental configuration.

    Description: Particle fluxes over the Beaufort continental slope (70.548°N/140.045°W; 710 m) were measured at two depths (290 and 490 m) during the fall 1992 to spring 1993 period. Sequential sediment traps recorded a peak in particle flux under heavy ice cover in midwinter. The fine-grained, highly terrigenous material was consistent in composition with bottom sediments from the shelf and upper slope. The peak occurred coincident with high current speed and isopycnal displacements characteristic of cyclonic eddies, and upwelling-downwelling (UW-DW) cycles driven by winds and drifting ice. Such phenomena may be the operative mechanisms for transporting sediments from shelf to basin in the Arctic. Available evidence favors the origin of the midwinter peak to be rainout of particles from the cyclonic eddies; we suggest that the particles were earlier entrained into the eddy when it impinged upon the upper slope. Estimates show that sediment-laden water in an eddy could sustain rainout at 250 mg m−2 d−1 for ∼120 days, so that sediment could have been transported 100–500 km with the eddy before reaching our site. Current speeds generated by wind-driven UW-DW events were insufficient to resuspend sediment on the outer shelf, and the timing of strong events was unconvincing as a link to the enhanced sediment flux over the slope 50 km to the north. Bottom current must exceed 19–36 cm s−1 depending on the sediment type to resuspend material from the seabed of the Mackenzie shelf.

    Description: The (2,0) vibrational band of the A 2 Σ − − X 2 Π 1/2 transition of platinum nitride, PtN, was recorded at Doppler-limited resolution using intracavity laser absorption spectroscopy (ILS) and at sub-Doppler resolution using molecular beam laser induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy. Isotopologue structure for 194 PtN, 195 PtN, and 196 PtN, magnetic hyperfine splitting due to 195 Pt ( I = ½), and nuclear quadrupole splitting due to 14 N ( I = 1) were observed in the spectrum. Molecular constants for the ground and excited states are derived. The hyperfine interactions are used to illuminate the nature of the A 2 Σ − excited electronic state.

    Description: Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is a key regulator of inflammatory responses and has been implicated in many pathological conditions. We used structure-based design to engineer variant TNF proteins that rapidly form heterotrimers with native TNF to give complexes that neither bind to nor stimulate signaling through TNF receptors. Thus, TNF is inactivated by sequestration. Dominant-negative TNFs represent a possible approach to anti-inflammatory biotherapeutics, and experiments in animal models show that the strategy can attenuate TNF-mediated pathology.
