Description: Peptide alpha amidation is required to produce some hormones, such as gastrin, from their glycine-extended precursors. This terminal posttranslational processing reaction is thought to be essential for the biological activation of many peptide hormones; only amidated gastrin exerts a physiological effect that results in gastric acid secretion. However, both amidated gastrin and glycine-extended gastrin stimulate proliferation of exocrine pancreatic cell line AR4-2J through selective receptors for the substrate and the product, respectively, of peptide alpha amidation. Thus, the amidation reaction may function as a determinant of the specific biological actions of products derived from prohormones.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Seva, C -- Dickinson, C J -- Yamada, T -- K08-DK-01903/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- P30-DK-34933/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- R01-DK-34306/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1994 Jul 15;265(5170):410-2.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor 48109.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8023165" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: Abstract A digital computer model has been made to study the effects of head up and head down tilt upon the heart and venous system, giving to both reasonably realistic functional properties. The venous system is treated as a series of segments of equal length, one of which is taken to be the right atrium. Provision is made for segmental capacitances to be individually adjusted, to allow realistic blood distributions to be studied. The programme calculates expected volumes, pressures and flows in each segment under different conditions of tilt, thus allowing prediction of the point in the system at which pressure changes least with body tilting.

Description: We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of 99.02 GHz free–free and H40α emission from the centre of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253. We calculate electron temperatures of 3700–4500 K for the photoionized gas, which agrees with previous measurements. We measure a photoionizing photon production rate of (3.2 ± 0.2) 10 53  s –1 and a star formation rate of 1.73 ± 0.12 M  yr –1 within the central 20 10 arcsec, which fall within the broad range of measurements from previous millimetre and radio observations but which are better constrained. We also demonstrate that the dust opacities are ~3 dex higher than inferred from previous near-infrared data, which illustrates the benefits of using millimetre star formation tracers in very dusty sources.

Description: Herschel far-infrared continuum data obtained as part of the Hi-GAL survey have been used, together with the GLIMPSE 8 μm and MIPSGAL 24 μm data, to attempt the first 3D-decomposition of dust emission associated with atomic, molecular and ionized gas at 15 arcmin angular resolution. Our initial test case is a 2 2 square degrees region centred on ( l , b ) = (30°, 0°), a direction that encompasses the origin point of the Scutum–Crux Arm at the tip of the Galactic Bar. Coupling the IR maps with velocity maps specific for different gas phases (H i 21cm, 12 CO and 13 CO, and radio recombination lines), we estimate the properties of dust blended with each of the gas components and at different Galactocentric distances along the line of sight (LOS). A statistical Pearson's coefficients analysis is used to study the correlation between the column densities estimated for each gas component and the intensity of the IR emission. This analysis provides evidence that the 2 2 square degree field under consideration is characterized by the presence of a gas component not accounted for by the standard tracers, possibly associated with warm H 2 and cold H i . We demonstrate that the IR radiation in the range 8 〈  〈 500 μm is systematically dominated by emission originating within the Scutum–Crux Arm. By applying an inversion method, we recover the dust emissivities associated with atomic, molecular and ionized gas. Using the DustEM model, we fit the spectral energy distributions for each gas phase, and find average dust temperatures of T d,H i  = 18.82 ± 0.47 K, T d,H 2  = 18.84 ± 1.06 K and T d,H ii  = 22.56 ± 0.64 K, respectively. We also obtain an indication for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons depletion in the diffuse ionized gas. We demonstrate the importance of including the ionized component in 3D-decompositions of the total IR emission. However, the main goal of this work is to discuss the impact of the missing column density associated with the dark gas component on the accurate evaluation of the dust properties, and to shed light on the limitations of the inversion method approach when this is applied to a small section of the Galactic plane and when the working resolution allows sufficient de-blending of the gas components along the LOS.

Description: We present observations of the 85.69 GHz continuum emission and H42α line emission from the central 30 arcsec within NGC 4945. Both sources of emission originate from nearly identical structures that can be modelled as exponential discs with scalelengths of ~2.1 arcsec (or ~40 pc). An analysis of the spectral energy distribution based on combining these data with archival data imply that 84 ± 10 per cent of the 85.69 GHz continuum emission originates from free–free emission. The electron temperature is 5400 ± 600 K, which is comparable to what has been measured near the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy. The star formation rate (SFR) based on the H42α and 85.69 GHz free–free emission (and using a distance of 3.8 Mpc) is 4.35 ± 0.25 M  yr –1 . This is consistent with the SFR from the total infrared flux and with previous measurements based on recombination line emission, and it is within a factor of ~2 of SFRs derived from radio data. The Spitzer Space Telescope 24 μm data and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer 22 μm data yield SFRs ~10 x lower than the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array measurements, most likely because the mid-infrared data are strongly affected by dust attenuation equivalent to A V = 150. These results indicate that SFRs based on mid-infrared emission may be highly inaccurate for dusty, compact circumnuclear starbursts.

Description: The C-Band All-Sky Survey is a project to map the full sky in total intensity and linear polarization at 5 GHz. The northern component of the survey uses a broad-band single-frequency analogue receiver fitted to a 6.1-m telescope at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory in California, USA. The receiver architecture combines a continuous-comparison radiometer and a correlation polarimeter in a single receiver for stable simultaneous measurement of both total intensity and linear polarization, using custom-designed analogue receiver components. The continuous-comparison radiometer measures the temperature difference between the sky and temperature-stabilized cold electrical reference loads. A cryogenic front-end is used to minimize receiver noise, with a system temperature of 30 K in both linear polarization and total intensity. Custom cryogenic notch filters are used to counteract man-made radio frequency interference. The radiometer 1/ f noise is dominated by atmospheric fluctuations, while the polarimeter achieves a 1/ f noise knee frequency of 10 mHz, similar to the telescope azimuthal scan frequency.
