    Description: Combining experiment and theory, we investigate how a naturally created heterojunction ( pn junction) at a graphene and metallic contact interface is modulated via interaction with molecular hydrogen (H 2 ). Due to an electrostatic interaction, metallic electrodes induce pn junctions in graphene, leading to an asymmetrical resistance in electronic transport for electrons and holes. We report that the asymmetry in the resistance can be tuned in a reversible manner by exposing graphene devices to H 2 . The interaction between the H 2 and graphene occurs solely at the graphene-contact pn junction and induces a modification on the electrostatic interaction between graphene and metallic contacts. We explain the experimental data with theory providing information concerning the length of the heterojunction and how it changes as a function of H 2 adsorption. Our results are valuable for understanding the nature of the metal-graphene interfaces and have potential application for selective sensors of molecular hydrogen.

    Description: We apply the process-based, distributed TOPKAPI-ETH glacio-hydrological model to glacierized catchment (19% glacierized) in the semiarid Andes of central Chile. The semiarid Andes provides vital freshwater resources to valleys in Chile and Argentina, but only few glacio-hydrological modelling studies have been conducted and its dominant hydrological processes remain poorly understood. The catchment contains two debris-free glaciers reaching down to 3900 m asl (Bello and Yeso glaciers) and one debris-covered avalanche-fed glacier reaching to 3200 m asl (Piramide Glacier). Our main objective is to compare the mass balance and runoff contributions of both glacier types under current climatic conditions. We use a unique dataset of field measurements collected over two ablation seasons combined with the distributed TOPKAPI-ETH model that includes physically-oriented parameterizations of snow and ice ablation, gravitational distribution of snow, snow albedo evolution and the ablation of debris-covered ice. Model outputs indicate that while the mass balance of Bello and Yeso glaciers is mostly explained by temperature gradients, the Piramide Glacier mass balance is governed by debris thickness and avalanches and has a clear non-linear profile with elevation as a result. Despite the thermal insulation effect of the debris cover, the mass balance and contribution to runoff from debris-free and debris-covered glaciers is similar in magnitude, mainly due to elevation differences. However, runoff contributions are distinct in time and seasonality with ice melt starting approximately four weeks earlier from the debris-covered glacier, what is of relevance for water resources management. At the catchment scale, snowmelt is the dominant contributor to runoff during both years. However, during the driest year of our simulations, ice melt contributes 42 ± 8% and 67 ± 6% of the annual and summer runoff, respectively. Sensitivity analyses show that runoff is most sensitive to temperature and precipitation gradients, melt factors and debris cover thickness. This article is protected by copyright.     Description: We build differential-reddening maps for 66 Galactic globular clusters (GCs) with archival Hubble Space Telescope WFC/ACS F 606 W and F 814 W photometry. Because of the different GC sizes (characterized by the half-light radius R h ) and distances to the Sun, the WFC/ACS field of view (200 arcsec x 200 arcsec) coverage ( R obs ) lies in the range 1 R obs / R h 15 for about 85 per cent of the sample, with about 10 per cent covering only the inner ( R obs R h ) parts. We divide the WFC/ACS field of view across each cluster in a regular cell grid and extract the stellar-density Hess diagram from each cell, shifting it in colour and magnitude along the reddening vector until matching the mean diagram. Thus, the maps correspond to the internal dispersion of the reddening around the mean. Depending on the number of available stars (i.e. probable members with adequate photometric errors), the angular resolution of the maps range from 7 arcsec x 7 arcsec to 20 arcsec x 20 arcsec. We detect spatially variable extinction in the 66 GCs studied, with mean values ranging from 〈E(B-V)〉0.018 (NGC 6981) up to 〈E(B-V)〉0.016 (Palomar 2). Differential-reddening correction decreases the observed foreground reddening and the apparent distance modulus but, since they are related to the same value of E ( B  –  V ), the distance to the Sun is conserved. Fits to the mean-ridge lines of the highly extincted and photometrically scattered GC Palomar 2 show that age and metallicity also remain unchanged after the differential-reddening correction, but measurement uncertainties decrease because of the reduced scatter. The lack of systematic variations of 〈E(B-V)〉 with both the foreground reddening and the sampled cluster area indicates that the main source of differential reddening is interstellar.

    Description: The sensory nerve endings of the rat tongue, cheek and palate were studied using immunohistochemical staining and transmission electron microscopy analysis. The specimens were fixed in modified Karnovsky solution and embedded in Spurr resin. Substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)- and protein gene product 9.5 (PGP b9.5)-containing nerve fibers in the rat tongue, cheek and palate were examined by electronic microscopical analysis and immunohistochemical localization. These fibers run very close to the basal lamina of the epithelium and extend into the filliform and fungiform papillae. Numerous plexiform fibers immunoreactive for substance P, CGRP and PGP 9.5 were found in the connective tissue of mucosa. Electron microscopic observations showed clearly immunostained nerve fibers, which are located very close to the basal lamina of epithelial cells. Some electron-dense granules may be observed in the axoplasms of both substance P and CGRP immunoreactive fibers. Several lamellar corpuscles into the subepithelial connective tissue papillae, Merkel corpuscles and numerous thin unmyelinated and myelinated axons were observed. The terminal axons revealed numerous mitochondria, neurofilaments, microtubules and clear vesicles in the base of axoplasmic protrusions. The lamellar cells showed caveolae and interlamelar spaces filled by amorphous substance. Between the lamellar cells and axoplasmic membrane, and in the adjacent lamellae region, desmosome-type junctions were observed. The quantitative and morphometric analysis showed nerve endings with an average area of 4.83 ± 3.4 μm 2 and 19.4 internal mitochondria in this site and the organized corpuscles with an average area of 79.24 ± 27.24 μm 2 and 24.23 internal mitochondria in this place. All the structures observed are involved in the transmission of pain and mechanoreceptors stimulus of these oral mucosae.

    Description: We present a simple approach for obtaining robust values of astrophysical parameters from the observed colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of star clusters. The basic inputs are the Hess diagram built with the photometric measurements of a star cluster and a set of isochrones covering wide ranges of age and metallicity. In short, each isochrone is shifted in apparent distance modulus and colour excess until it crosses over the maximum possible Hess density. Repeating this step for all available isochrones leads to the construction of the solution map, in which the optimum values of age and metallicity – as well as foreground/background reddening and distance from the Sun – can be searched for. Controlled tests with simulated CMDs show that the approach is efficient in recovering the input values. We apply the approach to the open clusters M 67, NGC 6791 and NGC 2635, which are characterized by different ages, metallicities and distances from the Sun.

    Description: We report on gate hysteresis of resistance in high quality graphene/hexagonal boron nitride ( h -BN) devices. We observe a thermally activated hysteretic behavior in resistance as a function of the applied gate voltage at temperatures above 375 K. In order to investigate the origin of the hysteretic phenomenon, we compare graphene/ h- BN heterostructure devices with SiO 2 /Si back gate electrodes to devices with graphite back gate electrodes. The gate hysteretic behavior of the resistance is present only in devices with an h- BN/SiO 2 interface and is dependent on the orientation of the applied gate electric field and sweep rate. We describe a phenomenological model which captures all of our findings based on charges trapped at the h- BN/SiO 2 interface. Such hysteretic behavior in graphene resistance must be considered in high temperature applications for graphene devices and may open new routes for applications in digital electronics and memory devices.

    Description: [1]  The Santa Marta Grande Cape (CSM) area, a relatively steep and narrow continental shelf off southeast Brazil, is under the influence of the Brazil Current and intense seasonal variations of the wind field that affect the composition of water masses and their circulation. Hydrographic data, satellite derived wind stress and numerical simulations are used to characterize the seasonal and shorter period variability of the oceanographic conditions off CSM, in the area between 27 o S and 30 o S. The study is focused on the upwelling episodes and the dynamical mechanisms associated with these events. Field data and numerical results indicate significant seasonal changes in the oceanographic structure, the water mass composition and the dynamical balance. During fall and winter, when southwesterly winds prevail and the frequency of meteorological frontal systems increases the region is characterized by waters of continental origin, the Plata Plume Water (PPW). During spring and summer deeper waters reach the surface layer due to the action of northeasterly winds. Coastal upwelling events are revealed by surface temperature minima observed south of CSM. Synoptic data show that these events occur in pulses associated with changes in the wind direction. The analysis of the numerical results show that this particular location of the upwelling band results from the synergy between shelf-break upwelling and the regional shelf circulation induced by the northeasterly winds both of which are modulated by changes in the coastline orientation and shelf width.

    Description: The use of porous materials as a restrictor in aerostatic bearings provides many advantages over conventional restrictors, such as small variation of temperature, high damping, high operational speeds, limited wear, and capacity to support radial, axial, and combined loading. A design of experiment (DOE) was carried out to evaluate cold-pressed cementitious composites as an air restrictor in thrust bearings. The physical and mechanical properties such as the apparent porosity, permeability, and elastic modulus were investigated in this work, thus verifying the structural and flow characteristics of the composites for such application. The composites fabricated with low compacting pressure and small silica particles provided the material requirements for porous bearings.
