Notes: [Auszug] The time between successive meridian passages (the synodic period) was found to give a considerable amount of information on the orbital characteristics of the satellite. In the interval between the sidereal and synodic periods the satellite covers about 30 deg. of arc in its orbit. The time to ...

Description: The Loran-C radio frequency processing is discussed. A diagram which generally illustrates the automatic gain control is presented. The augmented differentiator for pulse envelopes adapts conventional communications receiver with wideband AM capability to detect pulse signals such as Loran-C. The circuit enhances reception for surveillance and observation of HF over-the-horizon radar signals or others where time difference estimates between pulse returns are of interest. The high resolution VLF spectrum which receives weak VLF signals by using an HP 3581A wave analyzer detecting signals with a very narrow bandwidth of only 3 Hz is also presented.

Description: The design and design data for broadband loop antenna systems are presented. An investigation of some simple systems for possible Loran C receivers which require a bandwidth of greater than 20 KHz is discussed. Designs are presented for a 60 KHz WWVB antenna, several Loran C variations, and some 1750 meter band antennas. Signals received on all these, including one airborne experiment where a Loran C receiver gave the correct time difference reading within 1 microsecond while flying on a straightline course are examined. The phase reversal in the Loran C when the direction of travel changes 180 degrees is discussed and possible corrections are studied.

Description: A VLF receiver front end has been designed using standard linear IC's. The basic methods have been evaluated extensively on the omega 10.2-kHz channel but are readily adaptable to any other VLF frequency in the 10.2-20 kHz region. Applications for the modules exist in position location, time-frequency measurements, and signal propagation. The set provides control gates, zero-crossing signals, and analog outputs to interface with any type of digital logic, microprocessor, or analog signal processor.

Description: A modified high impedance preamplifier circuit which provides outputs to drive an Omega-VLF receiver and an ADF-LF receiver from a common antenna on general aviation aircraft is reported. The preamplifier was evaluated with fixed ground station receivers and results show the burn out problem of the first stage MOSFET during very close lightning discharges was eliminated.

Description: The U.S.S.R. has a VLF navigation system similar to OMEGA. Beukers has reported some information on the signal format, frequencies used, and the probable radiated power levels. From this data it appears possible to derive receiver operation modes and some implied reasons for the unique choice of the time-multiplexed frequency time base used. Of interest are receiver methods requiring processor gate complexity similar to a digital wristwatch including the use of mass-produced low frequency quartz crystal reference oscillators. The stability required of the local reference oscillator is probably much less critical than for other VLF receivers because of the signal format. One conclusion is that U.S.S.R.-VLF receivers might be fabricated at quite low cost making it possible for all persons in remote areas each to have his own private positioning aid. Further study of the actual transmitted signal format is warranted. While the nature of this memorandum is speculative because of the lack of confirming data, the receiver method proposed has evolved from related principles which have been applied to the operating OMEGA-VLF navigation system.

Description: A quartz tuning fork filter circuit and some unique CMOS clock logic methods provide a very simple OMEGA-VLF receiver with true hyperbolic station pair phase difference outputs. An experimental system was implemented on a single battery-operated circuit board requiring only an external antenna preamplifier, and LOP output recorder. A bench evaluation and preliminary navigation tests indicate the technique is viable and can provide very low-cost OMEGA measurement systems. The method is promising for marine use with small boats in the present form, but might be implemented in conjunction with digital microprocessors for airborne navigation aids.

Description: Portable battery operated LORAN-C receivers were fabricated to evaluate simple envelope detector methods with hybrid analog to digital phase locked loop sensor processors. The receivers are used to evaluate LORAN-C in general aviation applications. Complete circuit details are given for the experimental sensor and readout system.
