Notizen: The design and use of a tow net for sampling coarse fish fry in rivers are described, and its performance over a year is discussed with regard to species selectivity and size selectivity. The extent to which it can be used to provide data on the comparative abundance of the fry and their mean lengths and associated variances are described.

Notizen: The effect of various external concentrations of sodium and calcium on the survival and hatching of brown trout, Salmo trutta, eggs at pH 4.5 was tested. A calcium concentration of approximately 10 ppm (500 μE l−1) enables freshly fertilized eggs to survive whereas eyed ova are tolerant of deionized water acidified by sulphuric acid with no other ions added. Concentrations of sodium and calcium of 1 ppm (44 and 50 μE l−1, respectively) are sufficient to ensure the successful hatching of eyed ova and subsequent survival of the alevins. At pH 4.5 hatching is prolonged by the alevins passing through a temporary encapsulated stage.

Notizen: The survival times of hatchery reared year-old brown trout (Salmo trutta) were tested in solutions containing various ions at pHs between 3.5 and 4.0. The effect of calcium in prolonging the survival time compared with that in deionized water at all pHs tested, was more marked than that of sodium which was only effective at pH 4.0. Potassium and magnesium had no effect individually, but aluminium prolonged the survival time in sodium solutions. Fish from a naturally acid river (Tovdal-Norway) survived significantly longer than hatchery reared fish, indicating the importance of the previous history of the fish to their sensitivity to low pH.

Notizen: Abstract At a small upland acid lake in southwest Scotland, deposition, water quality and the lake catchment have been characterized over a two year period. In Spring 1986 powdered limestone was applied to three sectors of the lake's catchment. This paper outlines the scope, timescale and objectives of the project and gives some data on pre-intervention conditions.

Notizen: Abstract The circumstances under which catchment liming is an advisable economic alternative to direct water liming are described, as are research and operational experiences of catchment liming, drawing mainly on the Loch Fleet Project results and other European data. The arguments for and against catchment liming as a means of restoring acidified aquatic habitat are presented. In general, it is concluded that there are conditions, such as lakes with short retention times and/or where stream spawning fish species are involved, where catchment liming is a sensible option.

Notizen: Abstract The combined effect of Ca and pH on fish and fisheries is considered for both laboratory and field studies. It can be seen that at concentrations less than 100 μeq l−1, Ca can exert a significant influence on survival times of fish, and similarly in the field, the number of fishless lakes and the number of fish species found in lakes are less dependent on H+ concentration at low concentrations of Ca than at high Ca levels. The limited historical field data available suggest that alongside any increase there may have been in surface water acidity, Ca concentrations have also increased, and the latter may have offset to some extent the deleterious biological effects of this increased acidity. Nevertheless, details of seasonal and spatial variations in these important water quality factors will need to be considered before a full understanding of the response to acidity of a fishery can be reached.

Notizen: Abstract The effects of pH (c. 7.0, 5.4, 4.5 and 4.0), nominal Al levels (0 and 8 μmol L−1) and Ca levels (10 and 50 μmol L−1) on Na influx, efflux and netflux of brown trout have been investigated using artificial lake water of known composition. Low pH had little effect on influx, but tended to increase efflux, particularly in the low Ca treatments. A nominal addition of 8 μmol Al L−1 at pH 4.5 and 4.0 reduced influx significantly. Efflux was unaffected. Aluminium addition at pH c. 7.0 and 5.4 had no such effect. The measured Al concentrations at the end of the static 8 hr flux measuring experiments were markedly lower than the nominal amount of A1 added to the start.

Notizen: Abstract A research watershed liming project is being carried out at Loch Fleet in the Galloway District of southwest Scotland. This acid loch originally supported a brown trout fishery, but the number of fish caught by anglers declined during the 1950's and the fishery eventually disappeared about 20 yr ago. After 2 yr of pretreatment data collection, the first set of land time applications took place in the spring of 1986, and the resulting surface water chemical changes are very encouraging. Increases in pH and Ca concentration and decreases in A1 (especially the toxic labile monomeric fraction) concentrations have been observed in the streams and waters draining the treated subcatchments in the loch itself and in the loch outlet. Also, the normal trend for pH and Ca concentration to fall during periods of high flow in the main feeder stream has been reversed. In the spring of 1987, the loch was restocked with brown trout. Initial indications are that there has been very good survival of these fish, and that they managed to spawn during the 1987/88 winter. The chemical and biological changes brought about by the land treatments are described in detail.
