    Notes: Abstract Eggs were collected fromAnagasta küehniella (Zeller),Ephestia cautella (Walker),E. elutella, (Hübner),E. figulilella (Gregson), andPlodia interpunctella (Hübner) and exposed to adults of the egg parasite,Trichogramma evanescens Westwood, in a free choice experiment. Host eggs were ranked by decreasing percentages of parasitization as follows:E. elutella 〉 E. cautella 〉 E. figulilella 〉 A. küehniella 〉 P. interpunctella. Differences in percent parasitization were not significant betweenEphestia spp., butA. küehniella andP. interpunctella were parasitized significantly less often. Average percentage egg hatch after exposure toTrichogramma ranged from 5.0 to 9.3%, except forPlodia where it averaged 33.3%. It appears that inundative releases ofTrichogramma into commodity storages could play an important role in suppression of stored-product moth populations.

    Notes: Abstract Quantitative approaches to data analysis in the last decade have become important in basin modeling and mineral-resource estimation. The interrelation of geological, geophysical, geochemical, and geohydrological variables is important in adjusting a model to a real-world situation. Revealing the interdependences of variables can contribute in understanding the processes interacting in sedimentary basins. It is reasonably simple to compare spatial data of the same type but more difficult if different properties are involved. Statistical techniques, such as cluster analysis or principal components analysis, or some algebraic approaches can be used to ascertain the relations of standardized spatial data. In this example, structural configuration on five different stratigraphic horizons, one total sediment thickness map, and four maps of geothermal data were copared. As expected, the structural maps are highly related because all had undergone about the same deformation with differing degrees of intensity. The temperature gradients derived (1) from shallow borehole logging measurements under equilibrium conditions with the surrounding rock, and (2) from non-equilibrium bottom-hole temperatures (BHT) from deeper depths are mainly independent of each other. This was expected and confirmed also for the two temperature maps at 1000 ft which were constructed using both types of gradient values. Thus, it is evident that the use of a 2-point (BHT and surface temperature) straightline calculation of a mean temperature gradient gives different information about the geothermal regime than using gradients from temperatures logged under equilibrium conditions. Nevertheless, it is useful to determine to what a degree the larger dataset of nonequilibrium temperatures could reflect quantitative relationships to geologic conditions. Comparing all maps of geothermal information vs. the structural and the sediment thickness maps, it was determined that all correlations are moderately negative or slightly positive. These results are clearly shown by the cluster analysis and the principal components. Considering a close relationship between temperature and thermal conductivity of the sediments as observed for most of the Midcontinent area and relatively homogeneous heat-flow density conditions for the study area these results support the following assumptions: (1) undifferentiated geothermal gradients, computed from temperatures of different depth intervals and differing sediment properties, cannot contribute to an improved understanding of the temperature structure and its controls within the sedimentary cover, and (2) the quantitative approach of revealing such relations needs refined datasets of temperature information valid for the different depth levels or stratigraphic units.

    Notes: Summary Lagenidium giganteum (Oomycetes: Lagenidiales), a facultative parasite of mosquito larvae, infects the larval stage of most species of mosquitoes and a very limited number of alternate hosts. Host infection by this and other members of Oomycetes is initiated by motile, laterally biflagellate zoospores. Chemical bases for the various degrees of host specificity exhibited by these parasites is not known, but presumably involves receptors on the zoospore surface recognizing compounds either secreted by or on the surface of their hosts. Surface topography had no detectable effect onL. giganteum encystment or appressorium formation. Scanning electron microscopy documented the detachment of flagella during zoospore encystment. Bulbous knobs at the basal end of the detached flagellum were interpreted as encysting zoospores dropping the axoneme and/or the basal body and associated structures to which flagella are attached. Multiple signals appear to be involved in the initial steps ofL. giganteum host invasion. Zoospores of this parasite did not encyst on powdered preparations of chitin or chitosan (deacetylated chitin). Upon dissolution of chitosan in dilute acid followed by drying these solutions to form thin, transparent films, zoospores readily encysted. The degree of reacetylation of these films and the spacing of acetylated and deacetylated residues had no significant effect on zoospore encystment. Zoospores of a strain ofLagenidium myophilum isolated from marine shrimp, that also infects mosquito larvae, encysted on chitosan films. No encystment of spores of the plant parasitePhytophthora capsici was observed on chitin or chitosan films. Simulation of cuticle sclerotization by incubating chitosan films with different catecholamines and tyrosinase significantly reduced zoospore encystment. Zoospores that encysted on chitosan films did not germinate in distilled water. Germination could be induced by adding microgram quantities of bovine serum albumin or proteins secreted by motile zoospores into the water, and to a lesser degree by some amino acids, but not by various cations. Zoospores encysted and germinated on the pupal stage of some mosquito species. Appressoria were occasionally formed, but most subsequently sent out another mycelial branch, apparently without attempting to pierce the pupal cuticle. Methylation of pupal exuviae with ethereal diazomethane or methanol/HCl significantly increased zoospore encystment. Modification of chitin by catecholamines, lipids and protein on the epicuticular larval surface all affected host invasion.

    Description: The Dunleith Formation echinoderms lived on a shallow water carbonate platform (Benthic Assemblages outer 2 and 3 during the latter part of the Dunleith Regressive Cycle). The echinoderms were buried rapidly by storms or a volcanic ash bed in one example. The presence of complete specimens, entire crowns, attachment structures, and excellent preservation strongly suggests that these assemblages reflect in situ communities on the seafloor that have not been significantly mixed, transported, or concentrated in time. Most taxa are suspension feeders, namely 21 crinoids, one glyptocystitid rhombiferan, a paracrinoid, and two edrioasteroids, but a deposit feeding pleurocystitid rhombiferan is also common. Three assemblages are recognized and defined by their dominant taxa; in order of increasing depth, these are the Cotylacrinna sandra , Pleurocystites strimplei , and Cupulocrinus crossmani assemblages. Substrates ranged from hard- or firm-ground carbonates to soft carbonate and siliciclastic muds. Diverse attachment structures are recognized: the recumbent stems of calceocrinids, lichenocrinids on shells, small distal stem tips, and round to lobate calcite pads cemented to shells or the substrate, open distal stem coils directly on the seabed or coiled around soft objects thereon, and large conical and highly modified cirrus holdfasts on hard- or firm-grounds. The echinoderms were located at levels ranging from the seafloor to almost a meter above, with maximum diversity at about 50 mm above the seafloor. The size frequency distributions of food particles and the ranges of ambient current velocities for successful feeding by the juveniles and adults of the common crinoids are modeled using filtration theory. The food particle size distributions and the current velocities for feeding are correlated with the arm or filtration fan morphology of the crinoids. Differences between these parameters tend to partially separate the feeding ecologies of species located at the same elevation. Nevertheless, considerable overlap remains between species for small sized food particles and the lower ranges of ambient current velocities for feeding. Except for the Cotylacrinna sandra Assemblage, competition for space does not seem to have been important in regulating the ecological structure of the Dunleith crinoids. However, the deposit feeding pleurocystitids possibly competed for food and space in one example. The Dunleith assemblages are much more diverse with greater ecological complexity than seen in the relatively deep water fauna from the Upper Ordovician Trenton Group of the Walcott-Rust Quarry in New York (Benthic Assemblage 5).

    Description: A heterodyne detection scheme is combined with a 10.59 μm CO 2 laser dispersion interferometer for the first time to allow large bandwidth measurements in the 10-100 MHz range. The approach employed utilizes a 40 MHz acousto-optic cell operating on the frequency doubled CO 2 beam which is obtained using a high 2nd harmonic conversion efficiency orientation patterned gallium arsenide crystal. The measured standard deviation of the line integrated electron density equivalent phase resolution obtained with digital phase demodulation technique, is 4 × 10 17 m −2 . Air flow was found to significantly affect the baseline of the phase signal, which an optical table cover was able to reduce considerably. The heterodyne dispersion interferometer (DI) approach is found to be robustly insensitive to motion, with measured phase shifts below baseline drifts even in the presence of several centimeters of retroreflector induced path length variations. Plasma induced dispersion was simulated with a wedged ZnSe plate and the measured DI phase shifts are consistent with expectations.
