Notes: The maintenance of percutaneous cables for physiological monitoring or for the introduction of power to artificial organs is an attractive concept, but two problems interfere with their long-term survival. The exit sites regularly become infected, and the preparation is subject to disruption by the animal. These two problems can be solved by the design of a suitable skin outlet fixture of Teflon and velour fabric. The skin margins proliferate and adhere to the velour, producing a dry bacteria-proof seal which prevents the development of infection. The skin outlet fixture is shaped so that it is immobilized in relation to the surrounding skin, preventing excessive strain from being applied to the fabric-skin interface.Skin outlet fixtures of porous ceramic offer theoretical advantages, but there has been little success in attempts to induce the skin margins to proliferate into the porosities of the ceramic.
