Notes: Abstract— Duplicate tests have been performed to determine the effect of cathodic protection potential on corrosion fatigue crack growth rate of a modern offshore structural steel, produced by thermo-mechanically controlled processes. The experiments were carried out using compact tension specimens exposed to artificial seawater at 10°C and subjected to constant amplitude loading at 0.35 Hz. Reproducible results showed that the merits of cathodic protection potentials are strongly dependent on stress intensity ratio R and stress intensity range ΔK. It appears that a specific value of cathodic potential may not give comprehensive protection against corrosion fatigue within the spectrum of variable amplitude loading experienced in service. Fractography showed the initiation of secondary cracks on the fracture surface to be associated with the dissolution of calcium sulphide inclusions, regardless of imposed cathodic potential.

Notes: Abstract— The parameters are considered that control the threshold stress intensity in fatigue and relationships existing between these parameters are examined. A new relation is derived which is shown to be consistent with experimental data for a 0·15%C, 1·5%Mn steel.

Notes: [Auszug] In contrast to the polymer scientist, who has the privilege of calling upon an ever-expanding array of compositions from which to choose, the ceramic scientist has had to devote years of intensive research to the refinement of a relatively limited number of systems. So it is exciting news to hear ...

Notes: [Auszug] For SiC, common sintering temperatures are 1,800-2,200 °C (ref. 2). Powders of Si3N4 have to be sintered between 1,500 and 2,000 °C (ref. 3). An alternative method for the preparation of silicon-based ceramics at reduced temperatures is the pyrolysis of metalorganic ...

Notes: Abstract The influence of water vapor fluctuations on vertical turbulent fluxes is examined. It is shown that effects on density and, consequently, buoyancy are insignificant. However, because specific heat of air is a function of specific humidity, these fluctuations are found to influence sensible heat flux significantly. The critical parameter is the Bowen ratio, and a formulation relating the heat flux assuming dry air to the true value is given. The implications of this analysis to flux-gradient relationships in the surface layer are commented on.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics of densification and the kinetics of theα-β phase transformation have been measured during the hot-pressing of silicon nitride ceramics using magnesia as additive. Two mechanisms of densification have been identified. The first is a very rapid particle rearrangement, liquid-enhanced above 1550° C, which operates up to relative densities of about 0.65. The kinetics of the much slower decelerating second stage obey the Coble hot-pressing equation and the rate of densification is found to be proportional to the amount of additive. The controlling mechanism is believed to be diffusion in a boundary second phase, and values for the diffusion coefficient,D b, of the rate-controlling species in the boundary phase for temperatures above and below 1550° C are given. The kinetics of theα toβ transformation, the greater part of which occurs after densification is complete, are described by a first order reaction; the dependence of rate on the quantity of additive and on temperature is similar to that found for densification, and a similar controlling mechanism is believed to be responsible for the two processes.

Notes: Abstract The composition of the grain boundaries in hot-pressed polycrystalline samples of CoO containing varying levels of indium as a dopant has been investigated using Auger electron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Segregation of the indium to the grain boundaries has been observed and both the boundary enrichment level and the depth of the segregated layer have been found to vary as functions of additive concentration, annealing temperature and quenching rate. Models based on the existence of space charges or on strain energy terms are both unsatisfactory for the interpretation of the data obtained; it is believed that a contribution to segregation from non-equilibrium processes occurring during cooling must be present.
