Notes: Reports the findings of a combined survey of 16 large retailers, using apostal questionnaire and personal interviews. Researchers soughtinformation regarding the proportion of women holding senior managementpositions and the approach and attitude of retail companies to theadvancement of women. Results reveal no shortage of goodwill towards theprovision of equal opportunities for women, with many respondingcompanies actively pursuing policies aimed at improving the genderbalance of their workforce. Findings suggest that non-food retailers arelikely to have more senior women than food retailers. Senior womeninterviewees confirmed that working conditions in retailing were afactor in the statistics, but they suggested that negative attitudesfrom staff and customers also play a part. The isolation of lone seniorwomen was confirmed by personal interviews, and in-company mentors wereidentified as a possible help in that regard. The problem of balancing afamily and career remains while store managers are believed to beomnipresent.

Notes: Women in UK retail management are well represented at therecruitment stage and at middle-management level, but in spite of theprovision of equal opportunities policies, are not well represented atsenior levels (the so-called "glass ceiling" effect).Reports recent research findings about the experience of female managersin the UK retail industry. Researchers sought to explore possiblereasons for women's under-representation at senior management levels, including: varying emphasis on commitment; equal opportunitiespractices; and factors influencing career progression. Questionnaireswere distributed to a sample of 34 female managers awaiting promotion tothe senior position of store/general manager and data yieldedsignificant results. The majority of female managers in the sample werehighly committed and ambitious for promotion; criteria for promotion maynot always reflect equal opportunities policies; and results suggestthat women are disadvantaged by different career planning, a lack ofpolitical awareness and support.
