    Notes: The construction and operation of a scanning positron microbeam is reported. The positrons are obtained from a doubly remoderated positron beam with a normalized brightness-per-volt of 1.8×105 e+ s−1 cm−2 rad−2 V−1 Ci−1. The beam of 8000 e+ s−1 is brought to a 10×50 μm2 focus by a sectored lens and is scanned across a test grid. Possible applications to defect spectroscopy and the observation of small samples will be discussed.

    Notes: Substrate orientation plays a critical role in determining SiC epilayer quality, but limited work has been done to examine the effect of offcut directions on 4H-SiC epilayers. 4H-SiC epilayers were grown on substrates offcut 8° towards either the 〈11¯00〉 or the 〈112¯0〉 crystalline direction. Epilayers up to 15.5 μm thick, possessing smooth morphologies free of large-scale step bunching, were grown on both substrate orientations. Triangular defects were observed primarily on the wafer periphery, and the triangular defect density depended only on offcut angle. Atomic force microscopy analysis confirmed smooth surfaces for epilayers up to 15.5 μm thick grown on 〈11¯00〉 offcut substrates. Low-energy electron diffraction analysis of epilayers grown on substrates offcut towards 〈11¯00〉 showed an ordered surface. Nitrogen and aluminum doping were successfully obtained for epilayers grown on substrates offcut towards 〈11¯00〉, and n-type and p-type doping control were demonstrated. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A method for fabricating large-area patterned carbon nanotube field emitters is reported. Carbon nanotube films were prepared by first depositing and patterning a transition metal catalyst film on a substrate and then by heating the substrate in a hydrocarbon atmosphere. The catalytically grown carbon nanotube films had a high emission current density of about 100–1000 mA cm−2 at a low macroscopic electric field of 10–15 V μm−1. Electron emission from the carbon nanotube films was observed at a macroscopic electric field of 1–5 V μm−1. The I–V curve obeyed the Fowler–Nordheim (FN) relationship at low emission current density, but at high electric field, the I–V curve deviated from the FN relationship due to defects on the tip of the catalytically grown carbon nanotubes. The catalytic growth of carbon nanotubes offers an inexpensive and controllable process to produce a uniform, high density of emitters on large substrate surfaces. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Hulett et al. have suggested forming a magnified image of the positrons re-emitted from a surface having a negative positron affinity as a new kind of microscope, the positron re-emission microscope (PRM). We have built an immersion objective (cathode lens) for the PRM and obtained the first images using a Ni film back-illuminated with 5 keV positrons from a brightness enhanced slow positron beam. The magnification at the detector plane is 330x and the resolution is better than 1μm. With the addition of a projector lens the magnification and resolution should be sufficient to observe defect structures and large molecules on the surface.

    Notes: Summary Acridine Orange in concentrations from 0.01% to 0.2% was added to the first fixative solution in order to stain vibratome sections and small blocks of the articular cartilage of 2 month old rats. The interterritorial matrix of the radial or deep zone (zone 3) was examined. It contained reaction products with different morphology depending on the specimens used. In vibratome sections filaments were seen arranged in a homogenous pattern and changing in size with the concentration of the dye: diluted solutions produced finer filaments than concentrated ones. In contrast, in tissue blocks the staining pattern was not altered by different concentrations of Acridine Orange. However, with increase of the distance from the surface of the specimens the size of the filaments gradually decreased and formed a finer network. Since after preincubation with chondroitin ABC lyase only minute reaction products remained, an interaction of the dye with the sulphated glycosaminoglycans of the proteoglycans in the articular cartilage is suggested. The experiments show that by using mainly monocationic monomers of Acridine Orange the proteoglycans can be stained in a more expanded state than with polycationic dye polymers.
