Notes: The assembly of surface mounted component parts into 3-dimensional moulded circuit boardsenables the integration of electronic and mechanical functions. However, this requires theassembly processes to be adapted to the MID's 3-dimensional geometry. This paper describesresearch on the development of assembly systems for MIDs at the FAPS Institute. Limits on theapplication of solder paste on inclined process planes are discussed, as well as possibilities ofassembling with conventional assembly systems. A possibility for adapting existing assembly systemsto new requirements is demonstrated and a concept for an optimised MID assembly system will begiven.

Notes: Abstract With periodic fluid injection through small slots, a turbulent boundary layer is artificially disturbed on scales that are of the order of those of the natural quasi-periodic events. The periodic phase-average of the streamwise fluid velocity is determined from hot-film measurements, and used to find the coherent velocity component as defined by the triple decomposition. It appears that, when a disturbance is active, the generated flow pattern is very similar to the one caused by the interaction of a crossflow and a jet. However, when it is terminated, the turbulent boundary layer returns to its undisturbed state.

Notes: Conclusions A three-dimensional auto-correlation function is proposed as a tool to analyse 3-D fluid flow datasets. In order to test this concept, we analysed time and space evolving datasets obtained from visualizations of the flow over a half-span delta wing. The processed slices show that the regions with strong vortical motion can easily be detected. However, it is much more difficult to determine the cross-stream velocity components. Obviously, some aspects need more attention before we can decide on the usefulness of this technique: (1) the effect of resolution and noise; (2) the smoothness of the smoke field must be controlled in order to get a large grey scale value variance; (3) the time interval between two recordings must correspond to the time scale of the cross stream motions; (4) the test flow must be less complex.

Notes: Abstract  This paper examines spatial differences in the distribution of by-catch assemblages from the scallop [Pecten maximus (L.) and Aequipecten opercularis (L.)] fishing grounds in the North Irish Sea, during 1995. The sites examined have been exposed to differing known levels of fishing disturbance by scallop dredging, based on unusually high-resolution data extracted from fishermens' logbooks. Uni- and multi-variate techniques have been used on a production dataset (a value which incorporates both abundance and biomass figures), as well as abundance and biomass data individually. The original species list was reduced to higher taxonomic groupings in line with the theory that the latter is more appropriate for detecting anthropogenic change. Species diversity and richness, total number of species, and total number of individuals all decrease significantly with increasing fishing effort. Species dominance increases with effort. Total abundance, biomass and production, and the production of most of the major individual taxa investigated decrease significantly with increasing effort. Multivariate analysis reveals a significant relationship between fishing effort and by-catch assemblage structure. The taxa most responsible for the differences are the echinoids and cnidarians, but prosobranch molluscs and crustaceans also contribute to the differences. By-catch assemblage structure is more closely related to fishing effort than any other environmental parameter investigated, including depth and sediment type. We observed an approximately linear decrease in diversity with increasing fishing disturbance, and suggest this is primarily due to selective removal of sensitive species and, more importantly, habitat homogenisation. These results were interpreted in the light of ecological theories relating disturbance to community structure. The argument that invertebrate scavenger populations benefit from prolonged exposure to fishing disturbance was also examined, but no supporting evidence was found.

Notes: Summary A case of inherited epilepsy in the housemouse is described. When the affected animals are taken up by the tail they exhibit a series of clonic convulsions, lasting a few seconds, in which the head is thrown back, the eyes protrude, the mouth is opened, and the toes are spread. The anomaly has never been noticed in other purebred strains It seems to be dominant. The diet has an influence upon it, the mice can be fed in such a way that they do not exhibit any cnvulsions when examined in the usual way.
