    Description: The dataset compiles reconstructed changes in deep-water oxygen concentration for the past 1.5 Ma using stable carbon isotope measurements of benthic foraminifer: the epibenthic Cibicidoidies wuellerstorfi and the infaunal Globobulimina affinis, obtained from the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site 339-U1385 along the Iberian Margin (Northeast Atlantic; 2578 mbsl). The dataset covers the Middle Pleistocene Transition (MPT) and has a mean sampling frequency of ~290 yrs. Changes in North Atlantic deep-water oxygenation for the past 1.5 Ma reveal a significant (〉40 µmol/kg) reduction in glacial deep-water oxygen concentration at ~960 ka suggesting increased storage of respired carbon, which is consistent with a drawdown of glacial atmospheric pCO2 values. The dataset includes the following records obtained from the IODP Site 339-U1385: reconstructed oxygen concentration and stable isotope measurements for the past 1.5 Ma; paired sample data focussed on the MIS 27-21 interval including measurements for oxygen concentration, stable isotopes, U/Ca, U/Mn, carbon isotope gradients for both C. wuellerstorfi-G. affinis and C. wuellerstorfi-Uvigerina peregrina, as well as Uvigerina spp. abundance; Ba/Al data; Core-top data for a pilot study transect through Shackleton Site stations; and Gaussian Interpolated data for the carbon isotope gradient between C. wuellerstorfi-G. affinis from this study combined with Iberian Margin Site MD95-2042 data of Hoogakker et al. (2015; doi:10.1038/ngeo2317) for the last 160 ka data.

    Description: The dataset compiles P/Al XRF core-scanning measurements of IODP Site 303-U1308 (3871 mbsl) representing a reoccupation of Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 609. The data were obtained previously following methods described by Hodell et al., 2008 and used in support of reconstructed changes in deep-water oxygen concentration for the past 1.5 Ma using stable carbon isotope measurements of benthic foraminifer: the epibenthic Cibicidoidies wuellerstorfi and the infaunal Globobulimina affinis, obtained from the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site 339-U1385 along the Iberian Margin (Northeast Atlantic; 2578 mbsl). The P/Al dataset covers the Middle Pleistocene Transition (MPT) and shows a drop beginning with MIS 26 with both the mean and base level lower after 960 ka which is speculated to result from the increased occurrence of suboxic conditions during glacial periods in the North Atlantic.

    Description: A 25-cm long predominantly aragonite stalagmite was collected November 2, 2005 from Dharamjali Cave (29.5°N, 80.2°E) in the central Himalayas. This dataset contains stable isotope, trace element, XRF, U/Th dating, and dripwater data. The age model spans 4.2 to 2.3 ka BP, and the dataset records seasonal shifts in hydroclimate from 4.2 to 3.1 ka BP. Using the DHAR-1A half of the speleothem, 750 samples were milled at 100–300 µm resolution for stable isotope analysis (δ18O and δ13C) and analyzed at GFZ Potsdam. Further high-resolution stable isotope analysis at the University of Cambridge included 876 samples from the bottom 4 cm of the mirroring slab DHAR-1B, covering c. 4.2–3.6 ka BP. The δ44/40Ca measurements were made on 60 aragonite samples of aragonite and 1 calcite sample milled between 4.2 and 2.8 ka BP. The elemental composition of DHAR-1B was determined first with an Avaatech XRF scanner at the University of Cambridge, and later using laser ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) at the University of Waikato. U-series dating was performed at Caltech on 22 samples. Twelve U-series ages (between 2.55 and 4.14 ka BP) were used to construct the age models, using ensembles of 2000 Monte Carlo simulations for each proxy using the MATLAB-based COPRA script (Breitenbach et al., 2012, https://doi.org/10.5194/cp-8-1765-2012).
