Notes: Abstract The mechanical properties of pure and doped (Fe, Zn, Sn) InP single crystals have been investigated in the temperature range 293–600 K. It is shown that impurity hardening (increase in microhardness) is much more pronounced at high temperatures than at room temperature because of the retardation of moving dislocations by impurities, which is strongest at high temperatures. Appreciable scratch hardness anisotropy on the (001) face of the experimental crystals at 293 K was observed. It decreases rapidly as the temperature increases in the interval 293–600 K. It is shown that the [110] and $$[\bar 110]$$ directions on the (001) face of the experimental crystals are nonequivalent. The observed phenomena are explained by the different contributions of the two mechanisms of plastic deformation: slip and twinning in the process of scratch formation along the 〈100〉 and 〈110〉 directions, and along the [110] and $$[\bar 110]$$ directions.

Notes: Abstract The impurity weakening of crystalline NaCl:Mg and NaCl:Mn associated with purification of the matrix in a melt is demonstrated. This effect is manifested in a consistent change in the yield strength and mobility of dislocations. Its unusual temperature dependence is determined: in a number of cases weakening becomes greater as the temperature is lowered within the interval 293–4.2 K. A deviation in the elastic region of the stress-strain curves is observed to increase as the temperature is lowered. Plasticizing of crystalline NaCl is established: when the deformation temperature is lowered from 293 to 77 and 4.2 K the rate of rise in the yield strength of Cd2+ and Sr2+ doped samples is lower than that of undoped samples. An explanation for this fact is proposed.

Notes: Abstract The dependence of the size of the indentation and dislocation rosettes on loading time was investigated on the (001) plane of LiF single crystals. The measurements were performed in temperature range from room temperature to 170° C. The indentation time was varied from 0.2 to 103 sec. It was revealed that the change of the indentation size during creep was more significant than the change in dislocation ensemble tracks in the field of the concentrated load. It was shown that the dependence of the length of the dislocation rosette edge arms on loading time, when plotting in double logarithmic scale, was linear. This fact allowed the determination of parameterm, characterizing the dependence of the dislocation velocity on stress, using creep experiments. The values ofm proved to be in good agreement with the results obtained by different methods.

Notes: Abstract The peculiarities of the fracture of indentations on the (001) plane of MgO single crystals were investigated for two orientations of the Vickers indentor: (i) the indentation diagonals were parallel to the 〈100〉 direction, and (ii) the diagonals were parallel to 〈110〉. A brittleness anisotropy was revealed. A specific structure of “square” cracks was observed inside the indentations of the first orientation. Such a structure did not appear in the case of the second orientation. An explanation of the brittleness anisotropy was suggested using a model of material plastic flow in the indentation and considering the interaction of dislocations belonging to the active slip planes.

Notes: Abstract Indentation and scratching methods were used to study the anisotropy of the mechanical properties of the (001) faces of PbS and CaF2 single crystals. The surface relief near the indentations and scratches was studied. A study was made of the dislocation rosettes around the indentations and of the dislocation zones around the scratches, in the directions of maximal and minimal hardness. A scheme is proposed for the plastic deformation which occurs in PbS and CaF2 crystals scratched along these directions. A qualitative explanation is advanced for the experimental hardness anisotropy.

Notes: Abstract Studies were carried out on crystals containing various types of impurity: Ca2+, a hole-acceptor impurity, which dissolves well in NaCl; and Pb2+, an electronacceptor impurity, which dissolves poorly in NaCl. For the first time when doped crystals were annealed softening was observed to occur as a result of irradiation with soft x-rays prior to the annealing. The microhardness of irradiated doped NaCl crystals drops below the value that corresponds to the unannealed unirradiated sample. This effect is more pronounced in NaCl:Pb. It is postulated that the weakening effect is due to the breakup of impurity complexes. This assumption is supported by the results of studies on the laws governing the annealing of dislocation structures about the imprints of an indenter. These laws are shown to depend on the type of impurity: processes of dislocation polygonization were observed in NaCl:Ca crystals and the dislocation distribution was random in NaCl:Pb crystals. Pre-irradiation of the latter caused dislocations to be built in and polygonization to appear. Evidently, by breaking up impurity complexes in NaCl:Pb crystals x-ray irradiation brings the state of the impurity in them closer to that in NaCl:Ca.

Notes: Abstract In NaCl:Ca and NaCl:Pb crystals, we have investigated the effect of the impurity concentration and temperature on the parameter ξ=l e /l s where l e and l s are the path lengths traveled by edge and screw dislocations in the stress field of an indenter. The results obtained are explained taking into account additional inhibition of screw dislocations by debris.

Notes: Abstract The plastic deformation regions near the indentations on the (0 0 1) plane of MgO single crystals were investigated for an indentor under load and after unloading. It was established that the completion of slip-line structures arising during indentor penetration occurred during indentor removal. The presence of prolonged plastic deformation has been explained by considering the impulse character of the microindentation process of MgO at room temperature.
