Abstract The photochemical transformation of SO2 and the generation of aerosol particles are investigated in a variety of atmospheres, with and without initial aerosols, in clean and polluted air, and with various pollutants. The pollutants in addition to the SO2 include O3, NO, NO2 and water vapor in a variety of combinations. The most striking finding is, that only with the combination of SO2, NO2, and H2O is the aerosol particle production large.
