An advanced model, coupling the electric supply circuits with the electromagnetic field and including scalar and vector Preisach model of hysteresis, is presented in this article. The model is based on the finite element solution of the two-dimensional field problem, through the development of an iterative procedure, under periodic supply conditions. An experimental setup, constituted by a three limbed ferromagnetic core, has been especially designed and built to be used as a test bench for validation of the proposed model. Both unidirectional and rotational flux patterns can be generated by modifying the supply conditions. The reliability of the model is shown by comparing computed and measured results under different operating conditions. Finally, a voltage sinusoidal supply at the primary winding with a given load at the secondary is considered and discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
