    Description: Analyses of modern marine sediments have suggested that availability and type of organic matter, sedimentation rate, and openness of the sulfate system influence the degree of isotopic fractionation between seawater sulfate and sedimentary iron sulfides. Isotopic studies of ancient sulfides should, therefore, provide insights into conditions of deposition and early diagenesis. Analysis of d34S of disseminated pyrite from Cretaceous sediments of Hole 603B yielded fractionations relative to coeval seawater sulfate ranging from 40 to 55 per mil, which are within the range for modern oxic marine sediments reported by others. Sulfur/carbon ratios are similar to those found from modern marine sediments and suggest that disseminated pyrite formation was dependent upon available organic carbon. These results imply that depositional and early diagenetic conditions during the Cretaceous in Hole 603B were similar to those occurring in initially oxic marine environments today. Macroscopic (nodular) pyrite from Hole 603B is isotopically variable (d34S values = - 48 to + 33 per mil), but generally more positive than disseminated pyrite. The isotopic evidence suggests that macroscopic pyrite formed during late stages of sulfate reduction in a system closed with respect to sulfate. However, detailed analyses of large pyrite nodules did not yield a consistent pattern of isotopic variation from center to rim.

    Description: DSDP Hole 504B is the only hole in oceanic crust to penetrate through the volcanic section and into hydrothermally altered sheeted dikes. We have carried out petrologic and sulfur isotopic analyses of sulfide and sulfate minerals and whole rocks from the core in order to place constraints on the geochemistry of sulfur during hydrothermal alteration of ocean crust. The nearly 600 m-thick pillow section has lost sulfur to seawater and has net d34S = -1.8 per mil due to degassing of SO2 during crystallization and subsequent low temperature interaction with seawater. Hydrothermally altered rocks in the 200 m-thick transition zone are enriched in S and 34S (4300 ppm and +3.0 +/-1.2 per mil, respectively), whereas the more than 500 m of sheeted dikes contain 720 ppm S with d34S = +0.6 +/-1.4 per mil. These data are consistent with the presence of predominantly basaltic sulfur in hydrothermal fluids deep in the crust: following precipitation of anhydrite during seawater recharge, small amounts of seawater sulfate were reduced at temperatures 〉250°C through conversion of igneous pyrrhotite to secondary pyrite and minor oxidation of ferrous iron in the crust. The S- and 34S-enrichments of the transition zone are the results of seawater sulfate reduction and sulfide deposition during subsurface mixing between upwelling hot (up to 350°C) hydrothermal fluids and seawater. Seawater sulfate was probably reduced through oxidation of ferrous iron in hydrothermal fluids and in the transition zone rocks. Alteration of the upper crust resulted in loss of basaltic sulfur to seawater, fixation of minor seawater sulfur in the crust and redistribution of magmatic sulfur within the crust. This caused net increases in sulfur content and d34S of the upper 1.8 km of the oceanic crust.

    Description: During ODP Leg 111 Hole 504B was extended 212 m deeper into the sheeted dikes of oceanic Layer 2, for a total penetration of 1288 m within basement. Study of the mineralogy, chemistry, and stable isotopic compositions of the rocks recovered on Leg 111 has confirmed and extended the previous model for hydrothermal alteration at the site: axial greenschist hydrothermal metamorphism was followed by seawater recharge and subsequent off-axis alteration. The dikes are depleted in 18O (mean delta18O = +5.1 per mil +/- 0.6 per mil ) relative to fresh mid-ocean ridge basalt. Oxygen isotopic data on whole rocks and isolated secondary minerals indicate temperatures during axial metamorphism of 250°-350°C and water/rock ratios about one. Increasing amounts of actinolite with depth in the dike section, however, suggest that temperatures increased downward in the dikes. Pyrite + pyrrhotite + chalcopyrite + magnetite was the stable sulfide + oxide mineral assemblage during axial alteration, but these minerals partly re-equilibrated later at temperatures less than 200°C. The dikes sampled on Leg 111 contain an average of 500 ppm sulfur, slightly lower than igneous values. The delta34S values of sulfide average 0 per mil , which indicates the presence of basaltic sulfide and incorporation of little or no seawater-derived sulfide into the rocks. These data are consistent with models for the presence of rock-dominated sulfur in deep hydrothermal fluids. The presence of anhydrite at 1176 m within basement indicates that unaltered seawater can penetrate to significant depths in the crust during recharge.
