The Iron/Water System. - Concepts of Structural Organic Chemistry Applied to an Inorganic ProblemThe mechanism of magnetite formation from a solution of iron(II) hydroxide has been studied for the pure iron/water system at temperatures below 60°C and up to 225°C. Most attention is devoted to structural aspects of nucleus formation. Observations made on careful oxidation of an iron(II) hydroxide solution accord with the theory of the Schikorr reaction.

Im reinen System Eisen/Wasser wird der Reaktionsmechanismus der Magnetitbildung aus Eisen(II)-hydroxid-Lösung, sowohl bei unterhalb 60°C als auch bis zu 225°C untersucht, wobei strukturelle Überlegungen bezüglich der Keimbildung im Vordergrund stehen. Die Beobachtungen bei der vorsichtigen Oxidation einer Eisen(II)-hydroxid-Lösung stimmen mit der Theorie des Reaktionsmechanismus der Schikorr-Reaktion überein.
