Notes: The design and construction of a unique and precision pressure cell suitable for use in light-scattering experiments has been described. The cell has been adapted to allow scattering experiments from liquid samples. The optics of the cell has been especially designed to obtain a higher signal-to-noise ratio. The cell has been designed to be small and compact with sample volume ∼40 mm3. However, it still has a large heat capacity (∼250 J/K) which ensures easy and stable temperature control of the sample. The cell can sustain hydrostatic pressure up to 1000 bar and temperature up to 150 °C. When operated in the constant temperature and pressure mode it offers long-time (∼16 h) temperature and pressure stability of ±2 mK and ±0.05%, respectively, in this entire range.

Notes: Abstract The interaction of a laser with an intensity-dependent absorber has been analysed for discrete regions of operations of the laser. It is shown that the beam is thermally defocused due to absorption for the values of intensity under consideration. The fluctuation properties have been analysed by evaluating 〈I〉,〈I 2〉 and 〈(ΔI)2〉/〈I〉2.

Notes: Abstract We report on a theoretical analysis and experimental observations on the statistical properties of light scattered from a rotating ground glass using a multichannel analyzer based photon correlator system. Analysis of data indicates that the linewidth of scattered radiation depends on the scattering angle, which contradicts evidence presented earlier by Estes et al. and others.

Notes: Abstract Dynamic light scattering measurements on heat aggregation of zinc-insulin between temperaturesT=20 °C and 40 °C in 0.1 M NaCl aqueous solutions with pH= 4.01, 7.5 and 9.03, are reported. The experiments were performed on very dilute solutions in the concentration range 20 to 160 μg/cc. It has been observed that the process of heat aggregation was linear with temperature. The concentration dependence of translational diffusion coefficient was found to be negative in consistence with an earlier result. Upon temperature reversal the hysteresis-like behavior was found to be predominantly large at pH=7.5. The process of dissociation of Insulin aggregates with temperature reversal was also found to be linear with temperature decrement. Both the coefficients of heat aggregation and dissociation (upon temperature reversal) were larger at pH=7.5 than at pH=4.01 and 9.03. The low polydispersity in the correlation spectra indicated that both the association and dissociation processes were apparently stepwise in nature.

Notes: Abstract Brillouin scattering experiments have been performed on very dilute solutions of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in pH=4.7,I=0.1 M NaCl; insulin in pH=7.5,I = 0.1 M NaCl and polystyrene latex suspensions in aqueous medium at room temperatureT = 201 °C. The samples were first characterized by quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS) to determine the translational diffusion coefficient (D T), hydrodynamic radius (R H), and polydispersity of each of the samples at normal pressure. Subsequently, the samples were subjected to Brillouin scattering studies where the spectrum of the scattered light was analyzed by using a piezo-electric scannend five-pass Fabry-Perot interferometer. The hydrostatic pressure (P) acting on the samples was varied in the range from 1B to 825 B in steps of 100 B each. The pressure dependence of the measured sound velocityV s (P) could be least square fitted tov s (P)=A0 +A 1 P +A 2 P 2 with experimental error (± 1 %). This data has been interpreted consistent with an earlier work within the framework of modified Tait's equation of state and presumption of linear pressure dependence of the adiabatic bulk modulus in the moderate pressure regime.
