Summary 1. A study was made of the conditions for the hydrolytic and thermal decomposition of 3-alkoxybutyraldehyde acetals. With 3-butoxybutyraldehyde dibutyl acetal and 3-phenoxybutyraldehyde butyl phenyl acetal as examples, it was shown that their thermal decomposition can proceed in absence of catalyst in stepwise fashion with gradual elimination of a molecule of alcohol. 1,3-Dibutoxy-1-butene, 1-butoxy-3-phenoxy-1-butene, and 1-butoxy-1,3-butadiene were isolated. 2. A method was proposed for the preparation of 1-alkoxy-1,3-butadienes in high yields from 1-butene-3-ynyl ethers; the method is suitable for the higher alkoxybutadienes. 1-Butoxy-, 1-(cyclohexyloxy)-, and 1-(tetrahydro-2-naphthyloxy)-1,3-butadienes were prepared. 3. Some chemical properties of 1,3-dibutoxy-1-butene and 1-(cyclohexyloxy)-1,3-butadiene were investigated, and their structures were proved.
