Notes: We show that the chemical entropy production in the reversible Oregonator changes discontinuously at critical values of the concentration parameter at which points a limit cycle bifurcates out of an unstable steady state. The discontinuities in the entropy production are reminiscent of the behavior of the entropy change accompanying a first order phase transition in thermodynamics. They appear to be an example of dynamic phase transitions. For this model, by using Poore's algorithm, we show that in the case of f=1 the limit cycle is orbitally asymptotically unstable and the bifurcation is subcritical, but in the case of f=0.5 the limit cycle bifurcation at the higher critical concentration of P is subcritical whereas the one at the lower critical concentration of P is supercritical. Therefore, a discontinuous change in chemical entropy production accompanies subcritical Hopf bifurcations and possibly a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. It is conjectured that if a bifurcation is subcritical, attractors of different topological dimensions have different characteristic entropy productions in the same manner as two different states of aggregation of matter have different entropies associated with them.

Notes: The minority carrier lifetime (τ) in the base region of n+-p silicon solar cells has been measured in the temperature range ∼77–400 °K using the open-circuit voltage decay technique. The injection level has been maintained constant in the entire temperature region. Experiment and theory agree in a small temperature region if τn0 (minority carrier lifetime in heavily doped p silicon) is assumed to be temperature independent. However, an excellent fit between experimental and theoretical results is obtained if τn0 is assumed to vary as exp[−(Eτn0/kT)].

Notes: [Auszug] IN a recent paper1, we have shown that the infrared frequencies of glass can be calculated by taking the wave-lengths of the maxima of absorption bands of didymium glass as the incident exciting radiations, and those of the maxima of the fluorescent bands of the same glass ...

Notes: Abstract Gyarmati's principle for the evolution of irreversible processes has been applied to construct the variational solutions of laminar stagnation flow of incompressible Newtonian fluid in two dimensions. Variational solutions obtained in three different representations approximate closely the exact numerical result of longitudinal velocity component and the Gyarmati's principle in force representation yield the same result as obtained by Doty and Blick with the help of local potential method of Glansdorff and Prigogine.

Notes: Abstract The onset of breakaway oxidation and cracking of the oxide scale formed on 2.25Cr-1Mo steel in air at 1173 K have been studied by the acoustic emission (AE) technique. AE parameters, i.e. events, ring-down counts, rise time, event duration and root mean square voltage show negligible increase during isothermal heating at this temperature, until a point where a sudden increase in AE activity is found. This point corresponds to the onset of breakaway oxidation. An enormous increase in AE activity after the start of cooling from the oxidation temperature has been attributed to separation of the oxide scale from the matrix. The peak amplitude distribution is measured and a derived b parameter is calculated. This has helped in distinguishing the phenomena of isothermal oxidation at 1173 K and internal cracking of oxide scale during cooling from 1173 K.

Notes: Summary Irreversible systems in which both dissipative and relaxation phenomena are taking place can be appropriately described by the wave approach of Onsagerian thermodynamics proposed by Gyarmati. An important consequence of this theory is that it leads to hyperbolic transfer equations and these are referred to as thermodynamical waves. In the present note we examine the possibility of existence of an evolution criterion for such thermodynamical waves. It is found that a monotonic transition of the thermodynamical waves from non-equilibrium states to stationary states is insured only when dissipative processes are dominant over relaxation phenomena.

Notes: Summary The paper deals with the development of a new variational method based on Gyarmati's principle for the solution of boundary layer flow along a flat plate. It is found that the variational solution differs by about 4% from exact result when a trial function of third degree is chosen for velocity profile. The results obtained with the help of the force representation of the principle are the same as obtained by the local potential method of Glansdorff and Prigogine. A polynomial of sixth degree with the help of universal form of the principle gives a result which differs by about 0.65% from the exact solution. The governing principle of dissipative processes, it seems, will prove itself quite satisfactory analytical method for the boundary layer flows.
