    Notizen: This paper is aimed at evaluating the behaviour of small cracks emanating from notches in the Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Pulsating four point bending tests were performed at a nominal stress ratio of 0.1 and a frequency of 15 Hz on prismatic specimens with a central hole. The conditions of initiation and early propagation of fatigue cracks were investigated at two relatively high nominal stress levels corresponding to 56.6 and 100% of the 0.2% yield stress of the material. Microstructural effects were discussed. To this purpose a specific device based on the ‘in situ’ detection of cracks by photomicroscopy was developed. Corresponding results were analysed quantitatively considering the effect of the yielded region at the notch tip by elastic–plastic finite element modelling. Furthermore, information regarding the sites of fatigue crack initiation and propagation path were discussed on the basis of careful fractographic analysis of the specimens. The importance of the two phase α, β microstructure on the material damage was highlighted and correlated to the observed oscillations in the crack growth rate. Mechanically and microstructurally long cracks were correlated by linear-elastic fracture mechanics.

    Notizen: The problem of a two-dimensional elastic body, carrying an inclined edge crack and loaded by a cylinder rolling on the surface, is solved by the weight function method. The load induced by the cylinder on the cracked body was represented by the Hertzian pressure distribution, and the nominal stress distribution in the uncracked body was numerically evaluated by the superposition principle. The crack opening displacement components were obtained by an analytical Green's function. The partial crack closure was considered and the influence of the mutual forces between the crack faces included in the analysis, by which the effective stress intensity factors KI and KII could be evaluated. By considering different friction conditions between the crack surfaces and several crack inclinations, the evolutions of the effective KI and KII during typical loading cycles were analysed.

    Notizen: Abstract— An overview is presented of studies conducted at the University of Pisa on the Weight Function technique as applied to Fatigue Crack Grown analysis. The fundamental theoretical aspects of the technique are summarised, discussing some recent methods for the determination of the Weight Function. The application of the technique to non-linear (contact) problems and to the evaluation of the crack tip stress field is also discussed. It is shown that the Weight Function method allows one to efficiently consider many crack propagation problems, some examples of which are provided.

    Notizen: Abstract— The paper discusses the results of fatigue crack growth rate tests conducted in the presence of residual stresses. Three different residual stress distributions, obtained by laser welds, were employed in order to characterize the crack propagation behaviour under different conditions, producing either an increase or a reduction of the stress intensity factor due to external loads. Test results are analysed by means of a non-linear numerical model (based on the weight function method) and a knowledge of the fatigue crack growth properties of the base material, free from residual stresses. The results of the analysis are discussed with reference to experimental trends, in order to clarify the predictive capabilities of the method and aspects needing further investigation.

    Notizen: The present paper proposes a new test rig to perform fretting fatigue tests on a shrinkfittedshaft assembly. A shrink-fitted shaft is put under rotating bending by means of an eccentricoffset at one end. The shaft is driven near to its first resonance condition to significantly reduce therequired force to produce bending. Test parameters are the imposed bending stress amplitude, andthe hub radial pressure obtained through conical fitting. The proposed apparatus allows forchanging bending stress amplitude and hub pressure to generate fretting fatigue tests at differentconditions. In particular, the role of slip amplitude in fretting fatigue can be investigated. At thepresent stage the proposed apparatus is under construction at the Mechanical Department of theUniversity of Pisa

    Notizen: Abstract We study Burgers Equation perturbed by a white noise in space and time. We prove the existence of solutions by showing that the Cole-Hopf transformation is meaningful also in the stochastic case. The problem is thus reduced to the anaylsis of a linear equation with multiplicativehalf white noise. An explicit solution of the latter is constructed through a generalized Feynman-Kac formula. Typical properties of the trajectories are then discussed. A technical result, concerning the regularizing effect of the convolution with the heat kernel, is proved for stochastic integrals.
