Notes: Inoculation of nonhost pepper (Capsicum annuum) plants with the tomato wilt pathogen, Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici (FOL), caused no symptoms and the fungus was not recovered from any part of the plant. FOL, however, partially protected pepper plants from subsequent infection with Phytophthora capsici, Verticillium dahliae or Botrytis cinerea by significantly reducing the percentage of diseased plants and the appearance and intensity of symptoms. FOL did not inhibit the mycelial growth of these pathogens in vitro. The protection induced by FOL against Botrytis was inhibited by 1-methylcyclopropene (MCP), an inhibitor of ethylene perception, suggesting the involvement of this hormone in the signalling of FOL-induced resistance. The activities of β-1,3-glucanase and peroxidase 48 h after FOL induction were similar to those in control plants. Chitinase activity, however, was higher in the stems of plants inoculated with FOL. A study of the levels of phenolic compounds revealed that cell-wall-bound phenolics were more abundant in plants treated with FOL, especially in stems, while soluble phenolic contents did not differ.

Notes: Abstract  Amplified fragment length polymophism was assessed in 20 land races and nine elite lines of cassava from Africa, resistant and susceptible to the cassava mosaic disease (CMD). Eleven accessions from a representative core collection from Latin America, previously studied by AFLPs, were included as a reference. AFLP data from all accessions was analyzed by both the unweighted pair group mean average (UPGMA) and multiple cluster analysis (MCA) methods of analysis. Genetic differentiation between clusters and the coefficient of genetic differentiation was also calculated. Results reveal a genetic divergence between African and Latin American accessions, although some overlap was found between them. African land races resistant to CMD, were also found to be genetically differentiated from susceptible land races and from resistant elite lines. AFLP analysis identified a considerable number of duplicates in the African accessions, suggesting a sizeable percentage of redundancy. A unique AFLP fragment, found in a relatively high frequency in African accessions, but absent in the Latin American accessions, was found to be associated with branching pattern by QTL mapping in an F1 progeny derived from African and Latin American parents. The likely source and the utility of the unique AFLP fragment in understanding the processes of genetic divergence in Africa is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Kinetik der Hydratisierung von Ln2O3 (Ln=Sm, Ho, Yb, Lu) wurde bei Raumtemperatur und atmosphärischem Druck bezüglich des Einflusses der Aktivierungstemperatur und der Art der Darstellung der Oxide untersucht.
Notes: Abstract The kinetics of Ln2O3 hydration (Ln=Sm, Ho, Yb, Lu) have been studied at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, as have the influence of the activation temperature and the method of preparation of the oxides. The best correlation coefficients are obtained for a diffusion mechanism. If a structural relationship between the C-Ln2O3 and their precursors is considered, the possibility arises of the existence of defect planes in the oxides prepared from the hydroxide and carbonate. This facilitates the hydration process through a diffusion mechanism in the case of the rare earth sesquioxides prepared from the above precursors.

Notes: Abstract The behaviour toward hydration of a series of Ln2O3 has been studied as a function of water pressure and temperature by means of temperature programmed decomposition measurements. Thermochemical calculations have pointed out the structural change associated in going from ytterbium to lutetium in Ln(OH)3 to be responsible for the apparent anomalous behaviour of Lu2O3. On this basis generalizations about the expected behaviour along the 4f series have been considered taking into account the simple ionic model for solid lanthanide compounds.

Notes: Summary The immunocytochemical and lectin-binding properties of the magnocellular neurosecretory neurons in the hypothalamus of 2 reptilian species, the snake Natrix maura and the lizard Liolaemus cyanogaster, were investigated. Particular attention was paid to the secretory droplets present in these neurons. Antisera against bovine neurophysins I+II, arginine-vasotocin, and mesotocin were used. The following lectins were applied: concanavalin A (Con A), wheat-germ agglutinin (WGA), and Limax flavus agglutinin (LFA). Adjacent 1-μm-thick methacrylate sections were used to investigate the same secretory neuron and the same colloid droplets with all three antisera and all three lectins. Several sections were treated with trypsin and urea before immunostaining or lectin binding. Con A bound to both vasotocin- and mesotocin-immunoreactive neurons, WGA exclusively to vasotocin neurons; neither of these neurons reacted with LFA. The colloid droplets were present in vasotocin neurons but absent in the mesotocin neurons. These secretory droplets showed an affinity for Con A but not for WGA, and reacted with antisera against neurophysins and vasotocin. In Natrix maura, the colloid droplets became reactive with Con A and the antisera used only after pretreatment of the sections with trypsin and urea. Within the hypothalamo-neurohypophyseal system, antiserum against vasotocin and WGA revealed the same fiber bundles. It is concluded (i) that in reptiles the vasotocin-neurophysin precursor is glycosylated, (ii) that vasotocin neurons have the exclusive capacity to form colloid droplets, and (iii) that these droplets are an intracisternal (RER) storage form of the vasotocin-neurophysin precursor.
