Notes: Abstract Tungsten oxide powders with high specific surface areas (50 m2g−1) are prepared by using a variation on the hot kerosene drying technique. It is also shown that the use of a water in oil emulsion in the hot kerosene drying technique has no effect on the specific surface areas of the resultant powders. The reason for the absence of any effect is explained. The difference between the powders prepared by the hot kerosene drying technique and the variation of this, is the high specific surface area due to the porous structure of the powders prepared by the latter method.

Notes: Abstract Samples of hematite and of hematite doped with 1 at% lithium and 1 at% vanadium are prepared by the hot kerosene drying technique. The doped samples are also prepared by an impregnation method. The various samples are used to study the reduction with hydrogen to form iron. The results indicate that the rates of reduction are strongly influenced by the particle size of the initial samples and by the repartition of the additive in the bulk and surface layer of the hematite particles. It has been shown that both additives can retard the rate of reduction. The lithium exerts its maximum influence when present in solid solution and vanadium when concentrated in the surface layer. The importance of a careful preparation of samples to be used for reduction studies, is stressed.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract From solutions of ammonium molybdate this salt was precipitated with acetone. Decomposition in air at 330 °C yields MoO3 with a specific surface area of 17 m2/g, by means of reduction with hydrogen 4.5, 4 and 3.5 valent oxides may be formed with 30, 50 and 80 m2/g, respectively. Molybdenum (VI) oxide present as a monomolecular layer on supports is much less readily reduced than unsupported MoO3. This difference reflects the interaction of Mo ions with ions of the support. The reducibilities of the various catalysts show that Mo(VI) oxides interact far less with SiO2 than with Al2O3, CeO2 and ZrO2. This is also reflected in the rates of 2-propanol decomposition on these catalysts, the activities on MoOx and on MoOx−SiO2 being much higher than on the other catalysts.

Notes: Details are given of a further modification to the Ray ebulliometer which permits easy interchange of the Cottrell pump tube. The stability of the apparatus with different pump tubes and pumping conditions was also examined. Molecular weights obtained with the use of two ebulliometers and three solvent systems are compared. The validity of the recently developed ultracentrifuge methods for determining physical properties of molecules with molecular weights in the range 300 to 10,000 was checked by using a pure compound of known molecular weight. Agreement was obtained also between the data obtained by the Klainer and Kegeles method and separate sedimentation and diffusion data. The molecular weight of an ethyl acetate extract of black wattle tannin was determined by the ebulliometric and these ultracentrifuge methods. The ultracentrifuge value for the whole extract decreased with time due to sedimentation of high molecular weight impurities. The final ultracentrifuge weight-average molecular weight (1175) is in good agreement with the number-average value for the tannin polyphenols (922) obtained by ebulliometry. The difference between the values confirms the known heterogeneity of the polyphenols.
