    Notes: Summary A two year comparative field water relations study was conducted in central Maryland on three sympatric temperate lianas, Lonicera japonica, Vitis vulpina and Parthenocissus quinquefolia. Seasonal physiological activity was longer by approximately 9 weeks in the evergreen L. japonica, while peak rates of stem elongation were 4–10 fold higher in the two deciduous species. There were marked differences in vascular anatomy and water use patterns among the three species, however all three evidenced varying degrees of stomatal closure in response to decreasing soil water availability and increasing atmospheric evaporative demand. The range of leaf water potentials measured in these species was quite narrow in comparison to other temperate woody species. Two of the species showed no alterations in their tissue water release properties in response to decreased soil water availability, while V. vulpina showed a limited capacity in this regard. Most significant among the species differences in water relations were the conservative water use patterns of P. quinquefolia, and the midday maxima of transpirational water loss measured in L. japonica compared to the morning peaks in traspiration for the two deciduous species. The differences found in anatomy, leaf phenology, climbing mechanics, water relations and canopy development among these three sympatric vines implies a spatial and temporal partitioning of light and water resources and emphasizes the diversity of morphological-physiological suites of characters present among species co-occurring in the same macrohabitat.

    Notes: The strength and rheological characteristics of isoelectric soya protein precipitate, prepared in continuous tubular and batch-stirred tank reactors, were determined in relation to the separation efficiency and sludge discharge characteristics of intermittent disk and scroll discharge centrifuges. The batch tank precipitate showed greater resistance to aggregate shear breakup than the tubular reactor precipitate. This difference was of significance to the separation efficiency of the scroll centrifuge only. The tubular reactor precipitate sludge showed greater resistance to shear deformation and resulted in drier sludge for a given scroll differential speed. some compressive dewatering occurred for both types of precipitate sludge but shear-induced dewatering is proposed as the major mechanism. This study illustrates the need to integrate the design of protein precipitate formation and centrifugal recovery operations.

    Notes: Isoelectric soya-protein precipitate densities were measured for mean particle sizes ranging from 3.4-65 μm by gradient centrifugation, centrifugation in water-immiscible solvents, tracerdilution, gravity sedimentation of isolated particles. Coulter counter volume determination, and a comparison of Coulter counter and centrifugal sedimentation size distributions. The immiscible system and tracer dilution methods were both found to be unreliable due to experimental uncertainties. The Coulter counter volume measurement indicated the existence of a density-size relationship with the aggregate density decreasing as the size increased. Comparison with sedimentation measurements showed that the Coulter counter measures 80% of the total aggregate volume for 6-μm particles. The relation between aggregate density (ρa, kg m -3) and size (d, μm) was measured for isoelectric soya protein and casein precipitated by ammonium sulfate, using a comparison of the Coulter counter size distribution and centrifugal sedimentation. The functions were described for soya by \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \rho _a - 1004 = 246d^{ - 0.408} $$\end{document} and for casein by \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \rho _a - 1136 = 31d^{ - 0.441} $$\end{document} The gradient centrifugation method measured the buoyant density of hydrated protein precipitate which was independent of size, and is consistent with an aggregate structure consisting of primary particles. However, the aggregate structure was not described for all sizes by the theoretical cubic packing of hard-sphere primary particles, nor by the successive random addition of primary particles. The density-size functions indicated up to a fivefold difference in Stokes settling velocities compared to those calculated assuming a constant density difference.

    Notes: A theoretical description of a low-frequency, dual-source acoustic treatment of protein precipitates is presented. Two mechanisms for the potential improvement of the centrifugal separation of precipitates are proposed. They are acoustic aggregation, which causes an increase in particle size, and aggregate deformation, which results in an increase in aggregate density. Experiments with isoelectric soya protein precipitate indicated that the extent of ageing prior to acoustic conditioning is important. Support for both aggregation and dewatering was found and a maximum increases in the particle settling velocity of 20% was observed.
