Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Autor behandelt das gemischte Anfangswertproblem der linearen, dynamischen anisotropen Viskoelastizität vom Kriechtypus.
Notes: Summary In this paper we consider the mixed initial-boundary value problem for the linear dynamic theory of anisotropic viscoelasticity of creep type. If the classical solutions of this problem exist then conditions are specified to ensure that these solutions depend Hölder continuously on their initial data. The proof of this property employs, a Bernoulli transformation and follows a technique described by Murray and Protter [1]. Some uniqueness and further continuous dependence results are also established.

Notes: Summary In this article we study the classical solutions of the mixed initial-boundary value problem in the linear dynamic theory of anisotropic thermoelasticity. Conditions are established to ensure that the classical solution is either Hölder or logarithmic stable. These two forms of continuous dependence are pertinent to certain problems which require a numerical solution. The method adopted is an extension of the familiar energy arguments of continuum mechanics. Some uniqueness theorems are also presented.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Gleichungen der Thermoelastizität werden kurz hergeleitet.
Notes: Summary The equations of thermoelasticity are briefly derived. A non-linear constitutive equation for the heat flux vector is proposed as a more accurate description of heat flow at low temperatures. In the linear theory, it is shown that an exact equation, governing dilatational wave propagation, must be used for certain real materials. The corresponding approximate equation deduced byLord andShulman [1] predicts unstable lower order waves. The strong dilatational shock equations are completed for the extended heat conduction law. Dilatational constant profile waves are studied and used to discuss the shock structure of the dilatational non-heat conducting shock. Two methods for predicting the breakdown of the constant profile wave solution are compared. Both methods coincide in their estimation of the strain that would cause the breakdown. Some conclusions are drawn for real materials.

Notes: Summary The one-dimensional non-linear equations governing dilatational thermoelasticity are presented and a rate-type heat flux law is postulated. The charateristic wave speeds are then calculated for those materials possessing a free energy function. Two types of wave are possible: a mainly mechanical wave and a mainly thermal wave. The shock equations are also stated and from them two dilatational shock speeds are determined. The equations displayed in this paper belong to a class of generalised conservation laws for which an evolutionary criterion is constructed. The criterion is then compared with the entropy inequality as a means of rejecting physically unrealistic shock solutions of the equations of thermoelasticity.

Notes: Abstract A brief derivation of the equations for deformable dielectrics is presented. The basic theory generalises that due to Toupin [1], for it contains thermomechanical interactions and viscous dissipation within a non-equilibrium thermodynamic framework recently constructed by Bree and Beevers [2]. Some asymptotic and Lyapounov stability results are established for initial-boundary value problems in the linearised theory using extended energy arguments. Similar arguments are then applied to produce analogous stability results for small electro-mechanical perturbations superimposed on a large static deformation and a strong magnetic field.

Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with the effects of dissipation on classical solutions of the displacement and mixed initial-boundary value problems for a nonlinear elastic material. A proof of the asymptotic stability of the null solution in three dimensions is presented and the necessary assumptions are carefully discussed. The derivation of an analogous result for non-zero equilibrium solutions of the one-dimensional problem completes this work.
