    Notes: Thirty-nine barley varieties of different origin, representing different growth types, were included in a series of experiments aimed at analysing the variability in vernalization response, photoperiod sensitivity and earliness per se and establishing the types of ecoclimatic adaptability using multivariate analysis. In the case of spring barley varieties there was no correlation between any of the three traits. For winter barleys, a negative correlation was found between photoperiod sensitivity and vernalization response and between photoperiod sensitivity and earliness per se. Vernalization response and earliness per se showed a positive correlation. Among the winter barley varieties large variations were apparent in photoperiod sensitivity, vernalization response and earliness per se, which resulted in a tremendous variation in flowering patterns and frost tolerance. Between the spring barley varieties only wider variations in photoperiod sensitivity were detected. Based on the cluster analysis, the 39 varieties could be separated into seven groups. The spring barley varieties were placed in two groups, and the winter barleys in five groups representing different adaptational types. Among these five groups two represented the two opposing extreme combinations of photoperiod sensitivity and vernalization response. The combination of large photoperiod sensitivity and no vernalization response resulted in better frost tolerance than did the combination of photoperiod insensitivity and large vernalization response.

    Notes: The objectives of this research were to determine the individual and interaction effects of the Ppd-H1 and Sh2 loci on agronomic traits under short- and long-photoperiod regimes. Nineteen doubled haploid (DH) lines from the ‘Dicktoo’בMorex’ mapping population, which represented the four genotypes at the Ppd-H1 and Sh2 loci, were pheno-typed in controlled environment photoperiods. Both Ppd-H1 and Sh2 had significant effects on several agronomic traits, in addition to their role in determining first node appearance and flowering time. The magnitude of these effects depended on daylight. Under long-day conditions (18 h) Ppd-H1, and under short-day conditions (12 h) Sh2 was a significant determinant of most characters. The interactions between these two loci were significant for several characters, particularly for yield components, under both long- and short-photoperiod regimes. Under the long-day treatment, Ppd-H1 influenced plant height through the determination of node number. There was an epistatic association between the two loci for both 1000-kernel weight and tillering. The combination of photoperiod insensitivity and vernalization requirement caused a significant increase in tillering. This was paralleled by a decrease in 1000-kernel weight. Under the long-day treatment, neither Ppd-H1 nor Sh2 influenced plant yield. Under short-day conditions, the combination of photoperiod insensitivity and vernalization requirement had a pronounced negative effect on plant yield.

    Notes: Abstract Winterhardiness in cereals is the consequence of a number of complex and interacting component characters: cold tolerance, vernalization requirement, and photoperiod sensitivity. An understanding of the genetic basis of these component traits should allow for more-effective selection. Genome map-based analyses hold considerable promise for dissecting complex phenotypes. A 74-point linkage map was developed from 100 doubled haploid lines derived from a winter x spring barley cross and used as the basis for quantitative trait locus (QTL) analyses to determine the chromosome location of genes controlling components of winterhardiness. Despite the greater genome coverage provided by the current map, a previously-reported interval on chromosome 7 remains the only region where significant QTL effects for winter survival were detected in this population. QTLs for growth habit and heading date, under 16 h and 24 h light, map to the same region. A QTL for heading date under these photoperiod regimes also maps to chromosome 2. Contrasting alleles at these loci interact in an epistatic fashion. A distinct set of QTLs mapping to chromosomes 1, 2, 3, and 5 determined heading date under 8 h of light. Under field conditions, all QTLs identified under controlled environment conditions were determinants of heading date. Patterns of differential QTL expression, coupled with additive and additive x additive QTL effects, underscore the complexity of winterhardiness. The presence of unique phenotype combinations in the mapping population suggests that coincident QTLs for heading date and winter survival represent the effects of linkage rather than pleiotropy.

Außerdem wurde ein Verfahren angegeben, um die relativen partiellen Enthalpien der Komponenten aus diesen Daten zu berechnen. Die thermische Wechselwirkung des Natriumoktanoates bestimmt die Eigenschaften der untersuchten Phase. Wo die Dekanolgehalte am größten sind, nehmen die partiellen Enthalpien von Natriumoktanoat und Wasser noch zu, während die partielle Enthalpie von Dekanol relativ konstant bleibt, Das stimmt gut überein mit der allgemeinen Auffassung, daß die Aggregation zu „inverted micelles” durch einen kontinuierlichen Prozeß geschieht und daß die Eigenschaften der Aggregate konstant bleiben.
    Notes: Summary The relative molar enthalpy of solutions with three constant molar ratios of water to sodium octanoate in the isotropic decanol-rich solution phase, L2, of the system water — sodiumn-octanoate -n-decanol have been determined by means of calorimetry at 2° C. A method of calculating the relative partial enthalpies of the components from these data is described. It is the thermic interaction of the sodium octanoate that dominates the properties throughout the extent of the phase studied. Where the decanol content is highest, the partial enthalpies of the sodium octanoate and the water increase sharply while the partial enthalpy of the decanol remains relatively constant throughout the extent of the phase. This agrees well with the general view that aggregation into “inverted micelles” takes place as a continuous process and that the properties of the aggregates remain constant.

    Notes: Abstract The micelle formation of nonyl-phenols with various numbers of ethoxy groups (n EO=10–40) was investigated in aqueous solutions and the study was focussed on the effect of temperature (293–323 K), the chain length and the inorganic electrolyte (NaCl) on the critical micelle concentration (c.m.c). The c.m.c. was determined by surface tension and interfacial tension measurements in a water/n-octane system. On the basis of the actual c.m.c. and its temperature dependence the thermodynamic functions of micelle formation (ΔH° m,ΔS°m,ΔG°m) were also calculated. The latter study comprised the determination of the thermodynamic function for unity ethoxy groups (Δ(ΔY° m)) as a function ofn EO. According to the experimental results the micellar solutions are the more stable, the smaller the number of ethoxy groups in the tenside molecule and the higher the temperature as well as the electrolyte content of the system.

    Notes: Abstract A combination of in vivo and in vitro selection methods were used to increase aluminium tolerance in wheat using wheat x triticale crosses. Both in vivo and in vitro aluminium treatments significantly influenced the anther culture response. In vivo selection at the seedling stage resulted in significantly higher embryo induction. On induction media containing aluminium, the embryoid induction frequency dropped significantly, but there was an increase in the green plant regeneration frequency. In spite of this effect, all doubled haploid (DH) lines were more tolerant to aluminium in seedling tests than the winter wheat parent. The application of in vivo aluminium selection, before the start of anther culture, increased the probability of obtaining DH lines with significantly higher tolerance, compared to the original population. After three selection cycles of the original populations, there was a significant difference in the root regrowth rate of tolerant and sensitive plants. Both sensitive and tolerant plants showed a decrease due to the presence of aluminium in the induction media, with a greater decrease occurring in sensitive plants. Correlation between the rate of root regrowth in the seedling test and the change in embryo induction was positive, but moderate, emphasising the fact that plants with higher root regrowth tended to be more tolerant of the presence of aluminium in the induction medium.
