    Description: A criterion for system identification is developed that is consistent with the intended used of the fitted model for modern robust control synthesis. Specifically, a joint optimization problem is posed which simultaneously solves the plant model estimate and control design, so as to optimize robust performance over the set of plants consistent with a specified experimental data set.

    Description: Averaging methods are applied to analyzing and optimizing the transient response associated with the direct adaptive control of an oscillatory second-order minimum-phase system.     Description: A method is presented for curve fitting nonparametric frequency domain data so as to identify a parametric model composed of two models in parallel, where each model has dynamics in a specified portion of the frequency band. This decomposition overcomes the problem of numerical sensitivity since lower order polynomials can be used compared to existing methods which estimate the model as a single entity. Consequently, composite curve fitting is useful for frequency domain identification of high-order systems and/or systems whose dynamics are spread over a large bandwidth. The approach can be extended to identify an arbitrary number of parallel subsystems in specified frequency regimes.

    Description: A frequency domain method is developed for plant set estimation. The estimation of a plant 'set' rather than a point estimate is required to support many methods of modern robust control design. The approach here is based on using a Schroeder-phased multisinusoid input design which has the special property of placing input energy only at the discrete frequency points used in the computation. A detailed analysis of the statistical properties of the frequency domain estimator is given, leading to exact expressions for the probability distribution of the estimation error, and many important properties. It is shown that, for any nominal parametric plant estimate, one can use these results to construct an overbound on the additive uncertainty to any prescribed statistical confidence. The 'soft' bound thus obtained can be used to replace 'hard' bounds presently used in many robust control analysis and synthesis methods.

    Description: Averaging methods are applied to analyzing the transient response associated with adaptive control of large space structures. Using a dominant mode approximation to the plant, an analytical bound is found on the envelope of the adaptive response, characterizing many of the features of the response useful for control design (e.g., peak values, quadratic costs, settling times, etc.). An optimal adaptive design problem is formulated based on minimizing the product of the settling time and peak torque requirement. The resulting nonlinear constrained optimization problem is solved in closed form, and several properties of the optimal adaptive design are discussed.

    Description: System identification is studied for the explicit purpose of supporting modern H-infinity robust control design objectives. In the analysis, the true plant is not assumed to be in the identification model set. An integrated identification/robust control problem is posed in which the optimal solution guarantees the best robust performance relative to the system information contained in a given experimental data set. A numerical example demonstrating an approximate solution to the problem indicates the usefulness of the approach.

    Description: This paper describes recent efforts directed at the problem of on-orbit parameter and disturbance identification for the Space Station. Techniques are developed for identification of rigid body parameters, flexible body parameters, and quasi-static disturbances relevant to the Power Tower configuration currently under investigation by NASA. The paper concludes with a case study investigating the identification of modal frequencies in a 15 degree of freedom planar model of the Space Station under a variety of operational settings.

    Description: The optimal experiment design for on-orbit identification of modal frequency and damping parameters in large flexible space structures is discussed. The main result is a separation principle for D-optimal design which states that under certain conditions the sensor placement problem is decoupled from the input design problem. This decoupling effect significantly simplifies the overall optimal experiment design determination for large MIMO structural systems with many unknown modal parameters. The error from using the uncoupled design is estimated in terms of the inherent damping of the structure. A numerical example is given, demonstrating the usefulness of the simplified criteria in determining optimal designs for on-orbit Space Station identification experiments.

    Description: A new implicit dual technique is presented for stochastic adaptive control synthesis. In this technique, denoted as the method of utility costs (MOUC), a new control policy is derived from a known starting control policy by using a single iteration in time-varying policy space. An important result is that the new control policy yields a corresponding improvement in adaptive performance relative to the known starting policy. Since the starting policy can be chosen arbitrarily, the new policy has potentially superior performance relative to any existing design. Unlike other implicit dual designs, the MOUC can be applied to systems having constrained inputs, discontinuities, discrete valued disturbances, as well as in situations where the variances of the associated process statistics are large. A numerical example is given in which a controller is synthesized to provide improved performance relative to the Open-Loop Feedback policy of Dreyfus.
