    Notes: Abstract The chief sources of groundwater contamination on farms come from point sources and diffuse sources. Possible point sources are feedlots, poorly-sited manure piles, septic sewage-treatment systems—all of which can release nitrate, phosphates and bacteria— and sites of chemical spills. Diffuse sources are typified by excess fertilizer leaching from a number of arable fields. The basis of quality standards for drinking-water is discussed in relation to common contaminants present on farms. Samples of drinking-water were collected in 1991–1992 from wells on about 1,200 farms in order to study the quality of rural groundwater in Ontario. Analysis showed that approximately one third of wells were contaminated with bacteria, 14% were contaminated with nitrate, two wells were contaminated with pesticide, but 40% were considered unsafe because of the presence of at least one contaminant. These values were similar to those reported for similar regions in the U.S. There was no significant effect of agricultural practice on the proportion of contaminated samples. One response of Ontario's farmers to information on water quality has been to initiate their own program, the “Environmental Farm Plan,” which has 23 modules by which the risk of environmental contamination can be assessed. Government policies for agriculture can be expected to influence farming practices. However, the literature suggests that the consequences of policies aimed at reducing environmental contamination are poorly understood, not least because the instruments used for implementation can have widely differing impacts. The need for discussions on the ethics surrounding the relationship between food producers and consumers with regard to environmental contamination is identified.

    Description: Stored manures are often considered to be source of nitrous oxide (N2O). A study was done to identify manure characteristics and handling stages related to N2O production. In two laboratory experiments we investigated the production of N2O from several animal manures collected at different stages of manure handling or locations in stored-manure systems. Denitrifying enzyme activity, denitrification and CO2 production rates and chemical and fibre characteristics of manure samples were also determined. Most samples had low rates of N2O production. Exceptions were open piles of fresh beef manure and the moist surface layer near the base of an open pile of poultry manure. Production of N2O was most highly correlated with nitrite plus nitrate (NO2− + NO3−) content of manure regardless of whether results were expressed on a wet or a dry weight basis. Denitrification was the most probable source of N2O because N2O production with acetylene and denitrifying enzyme activities was higher than N2O production without acetylene. Stored manure is potentially an important source of N2O emissions, particularly when storage conditions are conducive to formation of (NO2− + NO3−).     Description: In Ontario, corn (Zea mays L.) yields with zero tillage are 10–15% lower than those with conventional tillage. Slower growth with zero tillage usually begins at the four-or five-leaf stage and continues until the 10- to 12-leaf stage. We hypothesized that restriction of nodal root development occurs with zero tillage and causes the reductions in shoot growth and final yield. Two greenhouse experiments were conducted in which nodal root development of corn plants was restricted by soil compaction or dry soil while the seminal roots grew in flowing nutrient culture. Compaction reduced nodal root length by 54%, and dry soil reduced it by 90% at the 10-leaf stage. Shoot dry weight at the 12-leaf stage was significantly reduced by dry soil but not by compaction. Leaf water potential and stomatal conductance at the 12-leaf stage were reduced by dry soil despite a negligible drop in pressure potential across the mesocotyl. Dry soil reduced shoot growth in terms of plant height after the eight-leaf stage. It was concluded that restriction of nodal root growth in zero tillage systems probably would not account for the reduced yields.
