    Notes: A simple and reliable technique for sealing laser quality vacuum-ultraviolet grade windows to high-temperature, bakable vacuum systems has been developed. Both 7.5-cm-diam MgF2 and CaF2 windows were found to be He leak tight to temperatures exceeding 330 °C. Smaller 4-cm-diam windows seal at temperatures exceeding 400 °C. The seals do not appear to be adversely affected by temperature cycling and they do not distort the optical quality of the window. The sealing technique has been used without failures in a Hg vapor four-wave-mixing cell that is used to produce high-power 130-nm coherent radiation.

    Notes: Exfiltration (of sewage into the ground from faults in ageing sewerage networks) has been recognised for many years but has never been quantified. It was considered that this leakage did not pose a groundwater-contamination threat because it was assumed that pathogens in sewage would either die off or be attenuated before reaching the groundwater level.This paper identifies why sewers have faults that could allow sewage exfiltration where the sewer is above a groundwater resource. Because of a lack of UK data on sewage exfiltration, research work in Germany is discussed and analogies are made between the sewerage networks of the two countries.Until recently, it has not been possible to positively identify sewage contamination of groundwater because of other pollutants and potential sources within an urban environment. The development of sewage-fingerprinting techniques has overcome these difficulties and provides conclusive evidence of sewage contamination of shallow and deep groundwater resources in researched areas. Studies of groundwater recharge and total solute loadings allow quantification of sewage exfiltration reaching the groundwater within the Midlands conurbation. The paper concludes that urban aquifers are potentially more vulnerable to microbiological contamination from leaking sewers than has previously been assumed.

    Notes: 6-Phosphogluconate dehydrogenase is one of the seven enzymes involved in the pentose phosphate pathway. Crystals of a mammalian and a protozoan enzyme have been obtained previously and structures determined. It is reported here that a bacterial 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, from Lactococcus lactis, has been purified and used in crystallization trials. Large prisms suitable for a detailed structural analysis have been obtained and characterized as orthorhombic, space group F222, with a = 70.4, b = 105.7, c = 474.6 Å. Diffraction has been observed to 2.2 Å resolution using synchrotron radiation. Structural analysis, in combination with ongoing biochemical characterization, will assist the elucidation of the structure–activity relationships of this enzyme.

    Notes: Abstract Amino acid compositions of the eggs of five lepidopteran hosts for Trichogramma minutum were compared with each other and with a non-host species, Rhodnius prolixus, in which T. minutum oviposits but does not develop. Host eggs are quite homogeneous, particularly when compared according to groupings of potentially interconvertible amino acids. Combined mole percent values for glycine, serine and alanine were higher in hosts (27.5–29.2 mole%) than in R. prolixus eggs (21.5 mole%), in bovine serum albumin (14.9%), which has been used as a protein source in artificial diets for T. minutum, or in many of the mixtures used in published diets for this species. Since these three amino acids make up 26.3 mole% of the adult amino acid content of T. minutum, their deficiency in diets could require metabolic compensation detrimental to development. Adult T. minutum arising from eggs of Manduca sexta, Choristoneura fumiferana, and Sitotroga cerealella are similar in amino acid composition to each other and, in general, to their hosts. Variability appears greater in hosts than in adult wasp composition, suggesting some interconversion of host amino acids to accommodate inflexible nutritional requirements of T. minutum. In the three host species tested, free amino acids constituted 15.8–19.3% by weight of the amino acid in egg contents. In M. sexta eggs, glycine, serine and alanine together make up 28.4% by weight of the total free amino acid, a much higher proportion than in many published diets. The four free amino acids (isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine and histidine) reported to be oviposition stimulants in experiments on encapsulated diets are present in sufficient concentrations to induce oviposition in the host species tested and in R. prolixus. S. cerealella egg contents having approximately 1.8 μg amino acid, yield one or rarely two adult T. minutum (1μg amino acid/insect). In contrast, M. sexta eggs with 94 μg amino acid each yield an average of 10–12 adults (8.2μg amino acid/insect). This suggests that small hosts are allocated few eggs which can only develop into small adults because of nutrient supply (parasitoid size in metabolically restricted), whereas much larger hosts are allocated proportionately fewer eggs than the former resulting in larger, and presumably more viable and fecund, adults (parasitoid size is established behaviourally).
