Notes: Ion-acoustic solitons have been investigated in a cold plasma in the presence of electron inertia through the derivation of the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation taking into account of weakly relativistic effects. Interestingly, relativistic solitons of both compressive and rarefactive characters are found to exist at the negligible difference of u0/c and v0/c (u0, v0 being the initial speeds of streaming electrons and ions respectively, and c, the velocity of light) of the order 1×10−7. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The valence band discontinuity of the n-type cubic GaN/GaAs heterojunction is measured by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. High quality cubic GaN films are grown on GaAs(100) substrates by nitrogen plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy, and the valence band discontinuity is determined by a combination of core and valence level spectra. A value of ΔEV=(1.84±0.1) eV across the GaN/GaAs heterojunction is obtained, which means that the discontinuity in the conduction bands at this interface is very small, such that a vertical contact scheme may be realized for GaN/GaAs heterojunctions.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Analysis of near-isogenic lines (NILs) indicated the presence of a novel resistance gene in the indica rice cultivar ‘Tetep’ which was highly resistant to the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea.‘Tetep’ was crossed to the widely used susceptible cultivar ‘CO39’ to generate the mapping population. A Mendelian segregation ratio of 3 : 1 for resistant to susceptible F2 plants further confirmed the presence of a major dominant locus, in ‘Tetep’, conferring resistance to the blast fungal isolate B157, corresponding to the international race IC9. Simple sequence length polymorphism (SSLP) was used for molecular genetic analysis. The analysis revealed that the SSLP marker RM 246 was linked to a novel blast resistance gene designated Pi-tp(t) in ‘Tetep’.

Notes: Abstract A method of discrete ordinates, originally due to Chandrasekhar, has been applied to solve the equation of transfer for the case of interlocked multiplet lines without redistribution. The solution thus deduced has been applied to find laws of darkening for the multiplets.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we shall construct the solution of the equation of transfer in a semi-infinite atmosphere with no incident radiation for Rayleigh's phase function by the method of the ‘Principles of Invariance’ and using the law of diffuse reflection. The solution will then be applied to find the laws of darkening for Rayleigh's phase function.

Notes: Abstract Theoretically the angular distributions of polarizations from the extended stellar atmosphere have been computed for the total optical depth up to 100. The atmosphere has been assumed plane-parallel. From the calculated results, it has been found that the polarization is dependent on the total optical depth and has its maximum value at a particular total optical depth 10. As regards polarizations due to asymmetries and distortions of the outer layers of a stellar body, we conclude that these asymmetries and distortions of the outer layers are dependent on the total optical depth and are maximum at a particular total optical depth.

Notes: Abstract Photoemission has been applied to study the electronic structure of YNi2B2C and related materials, with comparison of the results with the density of states generated from band structure calculations. The absence in photoemission of the predicted peak in the density of states at the Fermi level in undoped YNi2B2C, and the inconsistency of the photoemission data with a rigid-band model for the effects of Co doping on the electronic structure of YNi2-xCoxB2C are discussed. In addition, recent photoemission data from the new superconductor La3Ni2B2N3 are presented.

Notes: Abstract For productive utilisation of effluent–contaminated agricultural land, mobilisation and statistical analysis of potentially toxic elements in soil and plants of fields irrigated with mixedindustrial effluent have been undertaken. Total Fe,Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni and Cr have been estimated in soiland plant species of contaminated and noncontaminatedsites. 18 plants species and 18 root adjacent soilsamples from contaminated Kalipur area and 11 plantsspecies and 11 root adjacent soil samples fromuncontaminated Madhabpur area comprising majorcrops, vegetables and weeds have been included in thestudy. It is revealed that Hibiscusesculentus, Lycopersicon esculentum and Luffa acutangula growing in effluent–contaminated field show mobilisation ratio 〈0.5 for most of the PTE (Potentially Toxic Elements) likeCu, Pb, Ni, Cr and Cd and normal morphology.Surprisingly, weeds in particular, show highmobilization ratio 〉0.5 and simultaneously exhibithealthy gigantic morphology at the early floweringstage. Coriandrum sativum, Raphhanussativus, Solanum melongena, Spinaceaoleracea, Oryza sativum, Brassica oleraceashowed mobilization ratio 〉0.5 butmaintained normal growth. Based on mobilization ratioand external morphology, we suggest the cultivation ofplants H. esculentus, L. acutangula, L. esculentum in land irrigated with industrial effluent. The highest andsecond highest enrichment factor (EFpp)was found for Cd and Pb, respectively. Pearson'scorrelation coefficient indicated that the metal levelin soil is not the main factor governing metaluptake. This study will help in selecting plantspecies for cultivation in contaminated fields.

Notes: The reactions of N-phenylphthalimide films with ozone have been studied under a variety of conditions: dry ozone, moist ozone, ozone plus ultraviolet light, as well as ozone plus water vapor plus ultraviolet light. This compound is a conveniently available model for imide polymers. These reaction conditions represent simulation of certain aspects of the space environment. For each set of reaction conditions the reaction products were determined by combined gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Semiempirical molecular orbital computations were made of the relative energetics of possible reaction pathways consistent with the generation of the observed products. The reaction products found indicate fragmentation of the imidic moiety for which the energetics are favorable.
