    Notes: The new algorithm of the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity determination from the transient hot-wire method has been applied to measurements performed in several solid materials. The algorithm makes use of the exact formula for the temperature variations, instead of its simple, asymptotic form that has been employed earlier. In the process of the least-square optimization of the residual function three parameters are obtained; thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and the initial temperature. Two different variants of the method are presented: the classical one with the power kept constant during the measurements and the newly introduced constant current technique. The latter one has an advantage of requiring simpler conditioning electronics, and can therefore be recommended in space applications. The results of data processing show that thermal conductivity can be reliably determined even from the nonasymptotic part of the temperature measurements. The determination of thermal diffusivity is more difficult and requires high quality temperature data from the whole measurement interval. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The Kelperian motion of dust particles in the solar system is mainly influenced by the electromagnetic and plasma Poynting-Robertson drag. The first force is isotropic while the second one shows latitudinal variations due to the observed differences of the solar wind parameters in the ecliptic plane and over the solar poles. Close to the Sun other effects become important, e.g. sublimation and sputtering, as well as for submicron particles Lorentz scattering has to be taken into account. These forces are very weak for dust grains of moderate size (10–100 µ) not too close (〉0.03 AU) to the Sun and are neglected here. Assuming that the general form of the latidudinally dependent force is a series expansion in Legendre polynomials, we have studied the averaged equations of motion for the classical elements and found the first integral of them. The general character of motion is the same as for the classical Poynting-Robertson drag: particles spiral towards the Sun. The new features in the orbital evolution under the latitudinally dependent force as compared with the isotropic Poynting-Robertson drag are: (1) not only the semimajor axisa and the eccentricity ε but also the argument of the perihelion ω varies with time, (2) the rate of change ofa, ε, ω depends on the inclination. An example of particle trajectories in the phase space of elements is presented.

    Notes: Abstract The orbit-averaged differential equations of motion of dust particles under gravity, radiation pressure and Poynting-Robertson drag were given by Wyatt and Whipple (1950). An integral of motion enables the system of two equations in semi-major axis a and eccentricity e to be reduced to one equation, the solution of which is presented here in terms of analytical formulae. An efficient numerical algorithm to compute the solution is given. Listings of two FORTRAN routines are included.

    Notes: Abstract We outline a theory for the origin and acceleration of the fast solar wind as a consequence of network microflares releasing a spectrum of high frequency Alfvén waves which heat (by cyclotron absorption) the corona close to the Sun. The significant features of our model of the fast wind are that the acceleration is rapid with the sonic point at around two solar radii, the proton temperatures are high (~ 5 million degrees) and the minor ions are correspondingly hotter, roughly in proportion to their mass. Moreover we argue that since the energy flux needed to power the quiet corona in closed field regions is about the same as that needed to drive the fast solar wind, and also because at deeper levels (〈 2 × 105 K) there is no great difference in the properties of supergranules and network in closed and open field regions, the heating process (i.e., dissipation of high frequency waves) must be the same in both cases.

    Notes: Abstract During substorms, large-scale changes of the topology of the Earth’s magnetosphere following the variation of the characteristics of the interplanetary medium are accompanied by the induction of the electric field. In this study a model of a time-dependent magnetosphere is constructed and the large-scale features of the induced electric field are described. Local-time sectors with upward or downward field-aligned component and with intense perpendicular component of the electric field are distinguished. The electric-field structure implies the existence of outflow regions particularly effective in ion energization. With the vector potential adopted in the study, the region from which the most energized ions originate is defined by the local-time sector near 2100 MLT and latitude zone near 71° MLAT. The motion of ionospheric oxygen ions of energy 0.3–3 keV is investigated during a 5-min reconfiguration event when the tail-like magneto-spheric field relaxes to the dipole-like field. As the characteristics of plasma in the regions near the equatorial plane affect the substorm evolution, the energy, pitch angle, and the magnetic moment of ions in these regions are analyzed. These quantities depend on the initial energy and pitch angle of the ion and on the magnetic and electric field it encounters on its way. With the vector potential adopted, the energy attained in the equatorial regions can reach hundreds of keV. Three regimes of magnetic-moment changes are identified: adiabatic, oscillating, and monotonous, depending on the ion initial energy and pitch angle and on the magnetic- and electric-field spatial and temporal scales. The implications for the global substorm dynamics are discussed.
