    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Three gregarines are described from the digestive tracts of marine crustacea from Bombay, India. These are Carcinoecetes etisi n.sp. from Etisus laevimanus, C. matutae n.sp. from Matuta lunaris, and Caridohabitans setnai n.gen., n.sp. from Peneus semisulcatus. Various life history stages are reported.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Approximately fifty % of Natrix piscator from the vicinity of Bombay showed a haemogregarine in the peripheral blood. Schizogonic stages were found in great abundance in the lung capillaries, and occasionally in other internal organs. No parasites could be demonstrated in trombiculid mites of the genus Schongastia fed on infected snakes. Various developmental stages were found in the leech, Hirudinaria granulosa allowed to feed on infected Natrix piscator. The haemogregarine was originally described from this host in Ceylon on the basis of blood stages only and was named Haemogregarina mirabilis. Although the parasite exhibits several of the characters diagnostic of the schizogonic stages of the genus Hepatozoon, it is advisable for the present to retain it in the genus Haemogregarina.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Six hundred and forty-one lizards belonging to 28 species, and 29 snakes belonging to 12 species from East Africa were examined for blood sporozoans. Eight species of lizards and 4 of snakes were positive. Tissue phases were seen in some infections; no proven arthropod vectors were found. Parasites are described from previously unreported hosts; new host records, and new stages in the life histories of previously named parasites are reported. The sporozoans belong to the genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus, Haemogregarina or Hepatozoon, and probably Pirhemocyton. Reasons are given for the inadvisability of establishing new species of some of these on the basis of blood stages alone.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Carpilodes rugatus from Coconut Island, off the windward side of Oahu, was infected to the extent of 65% with intestinal gregarines. Infection was frequently heavy, especially with the intracellular stages. Two new species of Cephaloidophora are described. C. carpilodei n. sp. showed multiple infections in single host cells; as many as three fully developed trophozoites were found in one intestinal epithelial cell of the mid-gut. C. pinguis n. sp. was markedly different morphologically from C. carpilodei. In both species, intracellular development was prolonged with eventual production of septate trophozoites larger than the host cell. The gregariousness of the hosts was believed to facilitate intraspecific infection.Although other species of Xanthid crabs from the immediate vicinity were examined for gregarines, the other host species either were not parasitized or they contained gregarines belonging to species different from those found in C. rugatus. This was true even of host species placed in the same genus. Failure of these parasites of C. rugatus to become established in other species of Xanthids living in such close proximity is evidently due to biochemical or physiological barriers in the latter forms.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. This is the 1st reptilian Plasmodium to be described from eastern Asia. It is apparently of limited geographic distribution. Experimental infections may result in the production of more parasites than red cells in the circulating blood. A single erythrocyte may be infected by as many as 11 parasites. Despite the heavy parasitemia and destruction of erythrocytes, the hosts are apparently not affected by the infection. Mature schizonts are frequently fan-shaped; they produce 7–17 merozoites. The asexual cycle has a high degree of synchrony.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Sexual stages of a reptilian hemogregarine Hepatozoon rarefaciens are described from the hemocoele of a mosquito vector Culex tarsalis. The gametocytes associate within 0.5 hr after biting. Most of the gametocytes then pair off and begin to differentiate. After about 26 hr at 22–23 C, the macrogametocyte usually becomes crescent-shaped with the microgametocyte lying in the concavity. The nucleus of the macrogametocyte enlarges considerably, while the microgametocyte divides into 2 and eventually into 4 spindle-shaped microgametes which are biflagellated. The macrogametocyte increases in size and rounds up to form a macrogamete. Gamete formation is usually completed by 60 hr and fertilization begins soon thereafter. The zygotes develop into the uninucleate oocysts described previously. In some other species of Hepatozoon, gametogenesis has been described as taking place in the stomach of the arthropod vector, with the microgametocytes transforming without cytoplasmic division into non-flagellated microgametes. The occurrence of 2 distinct types of gametogenesis may possibly be a basis for separating Hepatozoon into 2 genera.
