    Notes: The influence of defoliation on the root, stubble and herbage weights of perennial ryegrass during establishment was studied on spaced plants in the greenhouse and field.In the greenhouse trial the rate of root elongation was reduced by a single defoliation. In both the field and greenhouse, cutting reduced the number of roots and tillers per plant but increased the number of roots per tiller. A few weeks after defoliating plants in the field there was a lower root weight on the cut plants than on the uncut. Eventually the influence of a single cut disappeared, but if the cutting was in the laie summer or autumn the plants commenced the winter with a smaller amount of root and stubble, and this appeared to have a deleterious effect on the earliest spring growth.Herbage growth in March and April was positively correlated with both root and stubble weights in the previous November.As the number of cuts during the establishment period (March-November) was increased from 0–4 the root and stubble weight per plant progressively decreased.The root and stubble weights decreased during the winter.

    Notes: Swards based on a mixture of SI 70 tall fescue and S215 meadow fescue were very early in spring, gave high yields for conservation in mid-season and, rested from mid-August, gave good grazing in November-December. Under this treatment, the tall fescue assumed dominance, and the swards were persistent and remained productive. The digestibility of the tall fescue swards was always higher than that of swards based on cocksfoot with which they were compared. During spring and autumn the former sward was better grazed by stock, but the position was reversed in mid-summer. Cattle grazing tall-fescue-dominant swards made better liveweight gains than those grazing cocksfoot swards during November-December.

    Notes: The value of varieties of Italian, hybrid and Westerwold ryegrass for early-bite production was compared at 32 centres in different environments. The relative performance of Italian ryegrass varieties was fairly consistent from centre to centre over a period of 3 years. Danish and Leda Daehnfeldt Italians produced the most, and S22 the least, early spring production. Good early-bite and total annual yields were obtained from hybrid ryegrasses. Swards sown in the previous autumn were more winter-hardy than spring-sown swards and appeared to be as early in the following year.

    Notes: Survey data collected during a grassland-recording investigation showed a strong positive correlation between nitrogen input and the output of utilized starch equivalent per acre. At the levels of output covered, sward type was not very important in relation to total yield. Herbage species were important for other reasons and the choice of seeds mixtures should be determined by factors such as earliness and lateness of growth and resistance to disease and drought. The survey showed that well-managed ley and permanent pasture are both capable of producing at a high level. A disturbing feature of the results was the low production of most spring resowings, primarily as a result of poor management. Although the records were obtained from an above-average group of farms, the results have general application. Potential responses to fertilizers may be even greater on less intensive farms, especially with regard to phosphate and potash. However, the level of production of a field will always depend finally on the level of management exercised by the farmer himself.

    Notes: Two cutting treatments were applied to a cocksfoot sward, and the changes in fructosan and soluble–sugar contents of the roots, stubble and herbage were studied over a complete year.Both the soluble-sugar and fructosan contents of roots were at a low level throughout the experiment. The total soluble carbohydrate in the roots never exceeded 4%. It is concluded that cocksfoot roots are not important storage regions for soluble carbohydrates.The total soluble carbohydrate in herbage varied with season and reached a maximum of 10%. It was not affected by cuuing treatment.In stubble the total stubble-carbohydrate content fluctuated markedly with season and reached a maximum of 18% in October; it was generally higher on the infrequently-cut swards than on those cut frequently. The soluble-sugar content was small and changed little with season or cutting treatment; the fructosan content, however, varied from 2 to 16–6% and accounted for most of the changes in the soluble-carbohydrate content. Stubble is apparently the major storage region for soluble carbohydrates in cocksfoot.Under sward conditions, the quantity of soluble carbohydrates in the stubble of cocksfoot may have a positive effect on the herhage growth immediately after winter defoliation. However, when swards are actively growing in spring, other factors, such as tiller size and number, may be equally important in determining the amount of herbage recovery growth.

    Notes: The performance of livestock, on winter grass was studied at eighteen sites in England and Wales from 1957 to 1960.Beef cattle generally gained weight while grazing winter grass. They invariably did better than similar animals overwintered on the normal feeding regime of the farms concerned.At 8 centres winter grass was utilized by dairy cows. Calculations indicated that the grass provided a valuable portion of their feed.The general condition and health of livestock grazing winter grass were satisfactory at all centres.Damage caused by poaching was largely prevented by controlled grazing.The production and utilization of winter grass had no adverse effects on sward recovery in the subsequent spring.

    Notes: The effects of management on the production of winter grass wen studied of 47 site England and Wales from 1954 to 1958.Cocksfoot swards provided better grazing during December and January than perennial ryegrass. The best treatment for winter-grass production from cockfoot swards was to rest from mid-August, giving un application of 52 lb of nitrogen per acre at this time.Perennial ryegrass produced relatively high yields if rested from early September, but the herbage should be grazed before the end of November because of the risk of it rotting.Cocksfoot herbage in normal swards lost more weight from December to January than cocksfoot sown in wide drills.Local Factors, such as aspect, altitude and sward vigour, were generally more important than latitude in determining level of yield in December. but there were greater lovsess of dry matter from December to January in the north than in the south.
