Notes: Abstract The adsorption measurements of hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) onto hematite suspension are carried out to study the dynamics of the polymer adsorption onto the suspension particles and to investigate the mode of the polymer adsorption. The polymer is found to show much affinity for the adsorption because of the opposite charges possessed by the polymeric flocculant and the suspension particles. Various adsorption parameters such as adsorption coefficient, the rate constants for the adsorption and desorption, are evaluated with the help of a recently proposed kinetic scheme. It is found that the extent of adsorption and the adsorption rate are adequately affected by increasing the pH of the suspension while, unexpectedly, the adsorption is found to show only a marginal increase on addition of Na2SO4. Both the amount of the adsorbed polymer and the adsorption rate are also found to increase with the degree of hydrolysis of the polyelectrolyte.

Notes: Summary Mixed ligand complexes of Cr(III), Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) with the p-diethylaminoanil of phenylglyoxal and either thiourea or ammonia, isolated as binary mixtures of isomers, were separated on thin layers of alumina or silica gel and on paper strips. Separation of mixtures in bulk was by column chromatography whereas quantitative analysis including determination of isomeric compositions of isolates was by TLC. Resolved isomers were identified using correlations of their RF with spectral properties.

Notes: The kinetic behavior of the adsorption of weak polyacid, namely, poly(acrylic acid) on a smooth glass surface has been studied at 30°C. For the evaluation of various adsorption parameters - the adsorption coefficient, surface coverage (θ), and thickness of the adsorbed layer - a new simple kinetic model has been proposed. The effect of the factors such as pH, electrolyte concentration, and molecular weight on adsorption behavior has been studied. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The kinetics of adsorption of gelatin from its aqueous solution on to silica has been studied at room temperature. The adsorption isotherms were found to be of the Langmuir type. From the adsorption isotherms, the adsorption coefficient, surface coverage and rate constants for adsorption and desorption were evaluated. The rate of adsorption was found to be maximum at the isoelectric point of gelatin and decreased with increase in pH of the adsorption medium. The increased ionic strength of the medium also caused an increase in the rate and amount of adsorption.

Notes: The kinetics of aqueous polymerization of acrylamide with peroxydiphosphate/bisulfite redox pair was studied at 35 ± 0.2°C under atmospheric oxygen. The rate of polymerization was found to be of first power to monomer, half-power to catalyst, and 0.75 power to activator concentration. The overall energy of activation was calculated to be 11.0 kcal/deg mol between 25 and 45°C. The effect of addition of organic solvents and dinitrobenzenes as retarders on the rate of polymerization were studied kinetically and retardation constants for nitro compounds were evaluated by a newly proposed method (intercept method), when two retarders act simultaneously.

Notes: The kinetic behavior of the adsorption of the egg albumin (EA) onto silica was studied from its alkaline aqueous solution at room temperature. Various adsorption and kinetic parameters such as the adsorption coefficient, surface coverage (θ), and rate constants for adsorption and desportion were evaluated using different rate expressions. The adsorption was found to increase on addition of H+ ions to the protein solution. It was also observed that the presence of inorganic salts and cationic and anionic detergents influence both the adsorbed amount and the adsorption rate. The effect of temperature on the adsorption was also investigated. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The kinetics of aqueous polymerization of acrylamide with KMnO4/glycine redox pair was studied in an atmosphere of nitrogen at 35 ± 0.2°C. The rate of polymerization was found to be first power on monomer, activator, and catalyst concentration. The overall energy of activation was calculated to be 15.66 kcal/deg mol (65.54 kJ/mol) between 30 and 50°C. The effects of various additives (alcohols, neutral salts, complexing agents, addition of catalyst) were studied. The dependence of the polymerization rate on the activator and catalyst concentration was studied in DMF-water mixture also. The molecular weight of polymer was determined at various temperatures of the reaction medium.
