Sommaire Une bobine de bande magnétique a une capacité de stockage d’information considérable; cependant, contrairement au tracé photographique ou à encre, il n’existe aucun moyen d’identifier avec rapidité et exactitude un signal donné. Un système de référence et d’adressage a été mis au point permettant la localisation d’un point donné quelconque sur une bobine de 35 cm avec une précision de 1/107 et à une cadence de répétition surpassant 1/108. Une série de pulsions codées est pré-enregistrée sur toute la longueur d’une voie; au cours d’un prochain enrégistrement ou de lecture, les pulsions sont décodées et présentées sur des tubes indicateurs numériques. L’enregistrement du code et la décodification étant nettement séparés à chaque seconde, ces processus ne prêtent à aucune erreur d’interprêtation et la bobine peut être déroulée à partir de n’importe quel point de sa longueur. Parmi 12 points le long de la bande magnétique, n’importe lequel peut être déterminé par des sélecteurs digitaux; une séquence de pulsions en code binaire-décimal est obtenue par des enregistreus graphiques. Des centres d’enregistrement éloignés des enrégistreurs à bande magnétique disposeront de présentations numériques annexes. Chacun de ces centres sera décrit dans des communications ultérieures.

Zusammenfassung Eine Rolle Magnetband kann viel Information speichern; es ist jedoch im Gegensatz zu graphischen Registrierungen nicht möglich, schnell und exakt ein bestimmtes Signal aufzufinden. Eine Index-bzw. Kennzeichnungstechnik wurde entwickelt, die mit einer Genauigkeit von 107 und einer Reproduzierbarkeit von besser als 108 die Auffindung eines beliebigen Punktes auf einem 14-Zoll-Band ermöglicht. Eine Serie von kodierten Signalen wird über die ganze Länge des Bandes aufgenommen. Werden dann Daten registriert oder abdge-spielt, so werden die Signale dekodiert und auf numerischen Anzeigeröhren angezeigt. Die Kodeaufnahme— und Dekodierungsprozesse sind eindeutig und getrennt für jede Sekunde; daher kann das Band an jeder beliebigen Stelle gestartet werden. Mit Digitalschaltern kann jeder von zwölf Punkten auf dem Band automatisch gewählt werden; zur Benutzung mit graphischen Registriergeräten wird eine Serie von binärkodierten Dezimalimpulsen erzeugt; und für Aufnahmestationen, die entfernt vom Magnetophongerät sind, stehen zusätzliche Digitalapparate zur Verfügung; jedes dieser Geräte wird in weiteren Mitteilungen beschrieben.

Abstract A reel of magnetic tape has the capacity for storing a great deal of information; but unlike a pen or photographic trace recording, there is no way of finding a particular signal quickly and accurately. An indexing and addressing technique has been developed to enable any point on a 14 inch reel of tape to be located with an accuracy of one part in 107 and a repeatability better than one part in 108. A series of coded pulses is pre-recorded along the complete length of one track; during subsequent data recording or replay the pulses are decoded and displayed on numerical indicating tubes. The code recording and the replay decoding processes are unambiguous and separate for each second, the tape may, therefore, be started at any point throughout its length. By means of digital switches any of twelve points long the tape may be automatically selected; a serial binary-coded-decimal pulse train is provided for use with trace recorders; and slave digital displays are available for use at recording stations remote from the tape recorder: each of these will be described in subsequent communications.
