    Notes: Two experiments were conducted on Long Key, Florida, United States, to examine the fate of waste water following sewage disposal in 10 to 30 m deep injection wells. This waste disposal practice introduces extraordinary amounts of nutrients into the ground water of the Florida Keys. In these experiments, artificial ground water tracers, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) and radioiodine (131I) were used to determine transport rates and directions of soluble nonreactive substances injected into the saline ground water underlying the Keys. Two types of transport were observed: (1) rapid flow (0.20 to 2.20 m/hr) presumably due to the many conduits present in the limestone; and (2) slower flow (less than 0.003 to 0.14 m/hr) associated with the limestone's primary porosity. Vertical flow was comparable to horizontal flow due to either the density-driven buoyancy of the waste water plume or to preferential flowpaths that allow upward advection or combination of both. These experiments showed that conservative artificial tracers injected into the subsurface reach surface water in a matter of days and can remain in the immediate vicinity of the injection well for several months.

    Notes: Phosphatized limestones from the Pourtales Terrace, Straits of Florida, have undergone fresh-water diagenesis, as shown by several selective petrologic features such as dissolution of aragonitic skeletal material and preservation and recrystallization of Mg-calcite. This interpretation is supported by the fact that greater than 94% of the uranium in these samples is in the U(VI) oxidation state.On the deeper Pourtales Escarpment, phosphatized limestones show no alteration features indicative of fresh-water diagenesis. The uranium in these samples is a mixture of U(IV) and U(VI) with oxidation-state ratios similar to other sea-floor phosphorites.Our interpretation of these data is that uranium in the terrace samples was oxidized when that area was emergent. The karsted surface of the terrace, therefore, is a result of subaerial exposure of this portion of the Floridan platform. The escarpment samples were never above sea level, and so more closely retain their original uranium oxidation-state ratios.

    Notes: Summary Sesquiterpene lactone glaucolide-A from Vernonia, incorporated in the rearing diets of five species of Lepidoptera, significantly reduced the rate of growth of larvae of the southern armyworm, Spodoptera eridania; fall armyworm, S. frugiperda; and yellowstriped armyworm, S. ornithogalli. Quantitative feeding tests demonstrated that decreased feeding levels and reduced growth resulted from ingestion of a sesquiterpene lactone. Ingestion of glaucolide-A increased the number of days to pupation in four of the species. In the southern armyworm, it significantly reduced pupal weight. Glaucolide-A decidedly reduced percentage of survival of southern and fall armyworms. Yellow woollybear, Diacrisia virginica, and cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni, larvae were essentially uneffected by the ingestion of the sesquiterpene lactone. Sesquiterpene lactones adversely affect growth rate and survival of certain insects that feed upon plants containing them. They apparently function as defensive products, screening out a portion of the potential herbivores.

    Notes: Abstract A field insect feeding experiment was conducted with two species ofVernonia which produce the sesquiterpene lactone glaucolide-A, one species which does not contain this bitter compound, and two F1 hybrid combinations. Also, naturalVernonia populations were observed over a two year period for their degree of herbivory. Contrary to the pattern observed in laboratory feeding preference tests,Vernonia flaccidifolia, the species lacking sesquiterpene lactones, was consistently fed upon less by insects than wereV. gigantea andV. glauca. Even though glaucolide-A appears to adequately protect some Vernonias against herbivores, especially mammals,Vernonia flaccidifolia has lost this compound. ApparentlyV. flaccidifolia has evolved an alternative defensive mechanism which is more effective against insects but less effective against mammalian herbivores.

    Notes: Abstract A two-year study of radium in the Suwannee River has shown that groundwater discharge, via springs, is a very important source of radium both to the river and to offshore Gulf of Mexico waters. Dissolved radium is maintained within relatively narrow limits in the river by uptake into suspended particles. In the estuary, dissolved radium versus salinity profiles show distinctive nonconservative behavior with radium in significant excess of its linear mixing value at mid-salinities. Unlike the situation in many other estuaries, however, desorption of radium from particles cannot account for most of the observed excess. Thus, the anomalously high radium characteristic of much of the west Florida shelf apparently does not have a riverine source. Direct effusion of high-radium groundwater into these coastal waters is thought to be the major supplier of radium, and perhaps other elements as well.
