    Notes: Abstract Agronomic studies were conducted to examine the effect of fertilizer N on black point incidence in Fielder soft white spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em Thell.). Black point incidence rose with increases in the amount of N supplied either as fertilizer applied during the growing season in irrigation water or as soil N, specifically nitrate, from fertilizer N application in previous years. A comparison of four different irrigation regimes demonstrated that black point incidence was highest under frequent irrigation (irrigate to field capacity at 75% available moisture) and lowest under conventional irrigation (irrigate to field capacity at 50% available soil moisture). In each irrigation regime, disease incidence increased as N rates were raised from 0 to 120 kg ha-1. A residual fertilizer-N study demonstrated in 1985 and 1986 that black point incidence generally rose with increasing levels of nitrogen from either preplant applications in the spring or soil nitrate from the previous year. However, additions of fertilizer N were shown to slightly reduce black point incidence at soil nitrate levels above 150 kg ha-1. A two-year fertilizer N study demonstrated that in treatments receiving the same amount (90 kg ha-1) of fertilizer N, the amount broadcast as a preplant treatment versus the amount applied in irrigation water in a fertigation treatment had no effect on black point incidence, but all fertilized treatments had significantly higher levels of disease than the unfertilized check.

    Notes: Summary Direct measurements were made of 3HHO and 32P taken up from labelled soil by roots of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and rape (Brassica campestris L.). Single roots were encased in labelled soil for 3 days, and the amount of 3HHO and 32P retained in the shoots was determined. Plants were grown to five stages of maturity in growth boxes under controlled conditions. Roots were labelled at up to four depths (to 90 cm) depending on the rooting depth at each stage of maturity. Uptake of 3HHO per unit length of root increased as the plant age increased, while uptake of 32P decreased to below detection levels by 45 days after germination. Larger amounts of both nutrients were translocated to and retained in the shoots from surface roots than from roots located deeper in the soil although the soil was uniform in temperature, bulk density, and composition throughout the growth boxes. Wheat roots were more efficient than rape roots in absorbing 3HHO; however, rape roots took up larger amounts of 32P per unit length of root. Neither native nor added P located more than 30 cm deep is of much importance to these annual crops, since uptake is minimal and the main demand for this nutrient occurs at early growth stages when the root system is restricted to the surface layers. re]19750812

    Description: Increased use of sulphur (S) fertilizers in southern Alberta led to a series of field and phytotron experiments to investigate the importance of S fertilizers and the role of subsoil reserves of sulphate sulphur (SO4-S) for barley (Hordeum vulgare) and rapeseed (Brassica napus). Two types of experiments were conducted. In the field-plot studies, barley was grown on dryland soils low in surface SO4-S but underlain by subsoil high in SO4-S. Neither elemental nor SO4 forms of S significantly increased barley yields in a series of 10 experiments on those soils. The comparisons were made at three levels of N fertilizers. In a series of lysimeter studies, three successive crops were grown in soil low in inorganic S (2.0 μg SO4-S∙g−1), or soil supplemented with 25 μg 35SO4-S∙g−1 soil at specified depths in the lysimeters. Barley was adequately supplied with S from SO4-S at a depth of 54–72 cm. It obtained 55% of its S from a high SO4-S (25 μg∙g−1) layer of soil at that depth, although 40 days growth were required before the S was effectively utilized. Five times as much S was taken up by the barley when the entire soil received an additional 25 μg SO4-S∙g−1 as when only the 54- to 72-cm depth was supplemented; however, the yields were unaffected. Most of the excess S was retained in the straw. Rapeseed took up an increasing amount of SO4-S as the proportion of the lysimeters that initially contained SO4-S was increased. Rapeseed was also able to utilize SO4-S from a depth of 54–72 cm. Rapeseed showed deficiency symptoms when most of the added and soil reserves of S had been depleted by previous crops; its growth habit became indeterminate and seeds did not develop. Although total dry matter yield was not greatly affected, seed yield was markedly reduced in S-deficient rapeseed. Rapeseed took up 10 times as much S as did barley when the S supply was just adequate for seed production. Although rapeseed had a much higher S requirement than barley, both crops were adequately supplied by subsoil reserves of SO4-S under the field and controlled environment conditions studied. The studies suggest that fertilizer recommendations should be based on soil analysis to a depth of at least 60 cm. Key words: Sulphur fertilizer, sulphates, 35S, barley, rapeseed, nutrient uptake

    Description: The effect of timing of application on the recovery of fertilizer N applied to irrigated soft white wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was investigated in a 3-yr field study and a 1-yr lysimeter study using 15N-labelled urea and ammonium nitrate. Fertilizer N treatments consisted of a check and 90 kg ha−1 applied as preplant N, postplant N or combinations. Under a controlled watering regime in the lysimeter experiment, timing of N application had no effect on plant growth parameters. In the field studies, although grain yield was not affected by N timing, grain N concentration increased from 17.9 to 19.6 g kg−1 as the proportion of postplant N was increased from 0 to 100%. Plant N uptake was greater when all of the N was applied postplant than preplant (means = 124.5 and 114.2 kg ha−1, respectively) in the field studies. Plant recovery of fertilizer N (FNR) by the difference method was greater when all of the fertilizer N was applied postplant (43.7%) man preplant (28.6%) in the field experiments. With a negative apparent added N interaction (ANI), the FNR was less by the difference method than by the 15N method. However, with a positive ANI, FNR was less by the 15N method than by the difference method. There was a greater difference between methods as the proportion of N applied as postplant N increased.     Description: The availability of nitrogen and phosphorus in fertilizer products labelled with both 32P and 15N was measured in a growth chamber experiment. The uptake of N and P by soft white spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) from a solution of acid urea phosphate fertilizer did not differ significantly from that of a mixture of granular urea and monammonium phosphate fertilizer. The fertilizer-P uptake efficiency of both sources was higher in a neutral soil than in acid or calcareous soils. Banding either fertilizer increased the uptake of fertilizer P compared with sources mixed with the soil, but did not significantly affect fertilizer-N uptake. The increase in fertilizer-P efficiency due to banding was significantly greater for the urea-monammonium phosphate than for the acid urea phosphate solution. Banding fertilizer did not increase the uptake of fertilizer P in the calcareous soil, and decreased the uptake of fertilizer N in that soil compared with mixed treatments. It is suggested that soluble Ca formed from the reaction of acid with naturally occurring lime may have reduced the availability of fertilizer P in the band.     Description: Six-row barley outyielded 2-row barley which outyielded wheat and oats in field plots on non-irrigated saline soils in southern Alberta. Salinity reduced the number of 6-row barley spikes less than it did the number on other cereals compared to spike production on adjacent non-saline soils. More kernels per spike were maintained on 6-row barley than on the other cereals under the salinity stress but average kernel weight was not differentially affected. Although salinity reduced the germination of wheat to a greater extent than it did the other cereals, adequate stands of all cereals were established and germination was not a major factor except on a plot where salinity stress was combined with spring drought. Six-row barley did not maintain its salt-stressed yield advantage over the other cereals under the drought conditions on a non-saline soil. The tolerance of cereals to osmotic stress thus differed from the tolerance to drought stress under dryland field conditions.
