    Description: 1. The effect of low-temperature and continuous-light treatment of seedlings of certain sugar beet strains in the isolation of distinct physiological types is described. The progenies of individual plants and bulk samples of different anthesis dates show some difference in the proportions of early and late plants, when these progenies are similarly exposed to low temperatures and continuous light in the seedling.2. Different treatments of progenies in relation to light treatment in the seedling stage result in distinct behaviour with regard to anthesis date and the number of plants reaching the stage of anthesis.3. The comparative resistance to bolting from a field sowing of seed obtained from plants which ripened seed after continuous light treatment of the seedlings is noted. This was so in spite of the fact that only 66% of the plants had reached anthesis as a result of the treatment, and the seed was obtained from the most rapidly bolting plants.4. Light and low temperature exposure of seedlings is effective in two different strains for isolating bolting-resistant types as measured directly from the seed of these bolting-resistant plants and selected progenies from these plants. Differences in the field germination and establishment from very early sowings were discernible in the progenies.

    Description: 1. The effect of low-temperature treatment on some varieties of wheat, barley and oats has been found to be profoundly affected by the time of sowing of the treated grain.2. Winter sowing showed the least vernalisation effect, while in the spring the stimulative action became more pronounced as far as earing acceleration is concerned, as the sowing was made progressively later. This was particularly marked in winter varieties.3. Developmental studies of the control and vernalised plants showed the stimulative action on early growth and growing point development in the winter varieties.4. Tiller counts on control and vernalised plants of three winter wheat varieties demonstrated the fact that each variety was stimulated to earlier tiller production, but in two of the varieties this resulted in a reduction of surviving ears at harvest.

    Description: 1. The effect of low-temperature grain pre-treatment on two winter varieties of wheat and two winter varieties of barley is seen in a very definite reduction in the number of tillers produced, which, however, had no subsequent effect on the number of ears surviving at harvest. Very little effect resulted from the treatment of spring varieties of wheat and barley in the number of tillers produced, although the spring wheat variety did show a slight reduction.2. Gross yields per plot were unaffected by the treatment in all the varieties, but the yields per plant were affected in the wheat experiment, and the yield per ear in the barley experiment. There was a general increase in the yield per plant of all wheat varieties, while in the yield per ear one barley variety was unaffected, another showed an increase, while the third suffered a reduction.3. The grain from treated plants was affected in 1000-grain weight and nitrogen content in the wheat experiment, while only the 1000-grain weight suffered any change in the barley experiment. Only one wheat variety showed an increase in 1000-grain weight, while each of the three varieties responded differently with regard to the nitrogen content of the grain. Similarly, each of the three barley varieties was affected differently with regard to 1000-grain weight, one being unaffected, another showing a decrease, while the third showed an increase.4. Analysis of the behaviour of the varieties with regard to tillering and ear production showed clearly that the maximum of tillers produced bears little relation to the number of ears at harvest. In the barley varieties high yield and low nitrogen were associated with the largest number of ears, which in turn was associated with the lowest tillering. In the wheat varieties high yield was associated with high 1000-grain weight. In both experiments the spring varieties outyielded the winter varieties whether the latter had been treated or not.

    Description: It has been shown in these breeding investigations that it is possible to combine the winter hardiness of low-yielding varieties possessing characters unsuited for cultivation in this country, with many of the desirable features of the best two-row spring varieties at present grown for malting purposes. Although, with the production of the new hybrid variety Pioneer, a definite advance has been made in the production of a two-row winter barley for malting, there is no reason to suppose that further improvements cannot be made, and work is proceeding with this object in view. But in addition to the special problem of malting barley, the results so far obtained indicate that there is considerable scope in this hybridization of winter and spring varieties for the production of forms suitable for growing as feeding barleys. The hybridization of varieties differing so widely in their morphological and physiological characters, and also in their ecological adaptation, gives a wide basis for the selection of a great range of forms. On the other hand, distant hybridization of this type is liable to result in the production of a very high proportion of worthless material, involving the loss of the highest expression of the very specialized characters necessary in a barley possessing the attributes of a high-yielding malting variety with satisfactory field characters.

    Description: 1. Growing young sugar-beet plants under continuous illumination before transplanting into the field induced stem elongation and anthesis in considerably greater proportions than in plants not exposed to continuous light exposure.2. The technique of growing young plants under continuous light exposure during the winter offers a means of rapid multiplication of small seed stocks, and also of isolating the various physiological types comprising the population. In particular, the technique should make it possible to select types resistant to bolting.3. Analysis of the glomerule populations obtained from the plants showing anthesis at definite dates indicates that there is a definite trend in the proportions of large, medium and small glomerules as the season progresses.

    Description: 1. Field experiments on the use of cut ware setts with the potato varieties Arran Banner, King Edward and Majestic have shown that with proper handling no loss in plant establishment need result. When the cut setts are planted at the same distances as whole setts, there is liable to be a reduction in the yield per acre because of the lower yield per plant, but the actual rate of increase may be increased considerably by cutting because of the larger number of plants obtainable.2. No benefit has been found from the practice of dusting the cut surfaces of tubers of Majestic with slag, lime or ashes, while adverse effects resulted from the use of a fungicide and alum.3. The exposure of cut setts to drying conditions lowers their resistance to attacks by micro-organisms, and encourages the breakdown of the tuber flesh by bacteria of the carotovorum group.4. In general, the use of certain fungicides, either directly on the cut surface, or as a means of moistening sack coverings, is not to be recommended because of the adverse effects of the fungicide on the natural resistance of the live tissue of the tuber flesh.
