    Description: Abstract The lakes that form via ice‐rich permafrost thaw emit CH4 and CO2 to the atmosphere from previously frozen ancient permafrost sources. Despite this potential to positively feedback to climate change, lake carbon emission sources are not well understood on whole‐lake scales, complicating upscaling. In this study, we used observations of radiocarbon (14C) and stable carbon (13C) isotopes in the summer and winter dissolved CH4 and CO2 pools, ebullition‐CH4, and multiple independent mass balance approaches to characterize whole‐lake emission sources and apportion annual emission pathways. Observations focused on five lakes with variable thermokarst in interior Alaska. The 14C age of discrete ebullition‐CH4 seeps ranged from 395 ± 15 to 28,240 ± 150 YBP across all study lakes; however, dissolved 14CH4 was younger than 4,730 YBP. In the primary study lake, Goldstream L., the integrated whole‐lake 14C age of ebullition‐CH4, as determined by three different approaches, ranged from 3,290 to 6,740 YBP. A new dissolved‐14C‐CH4‐based approach to estimating ebullition 14C age and flux showed close agreement to previous ice‐bubble surveys and bubble‐trap flux estimates. Differences in open water versus ice‐covered dissolved gas concentrations and their 14C and 13C isotopes revealed the influence of winter ice trapping and forcing ebullition‐CH4 into the underlying water column, where it comprised 50% of the total dissolved CH4 pool by the end of winter. Across the study lakes, we found a relationship between the whole‐lake 14C age of dissolved CH4 and CO2 and the extent of active thermokarst, representing a positive feedback system that is sensitive to climate warming.

    Description: When warm humid air enters an aircraft fuel tank, condensation will occur on surfaces that are colder than the dew point. These surfaces can include the tank ceiling, vertical and sloping walls and the air/fuel free surface. The microscopic water droplets deposited by condensation will eventually make their way to the fuel tank sump under the competing influences of gravity and surface tension. Accumulated water in fuel tanks can lead to fuel contamination and must be drained from the sump on a regular basis. One proposed method to improve the efficiency of water drainage to the sump is to use hydrophobic coatings on the walls of the tank. Hydrophobic coatings should reduce the critical size of water droplets pinned to the surface and increase the runoff speed of drops once in motion. We discuss experiments to measure these critical sizes and runoff speeds on different surfaces and compare the results to predictions from simple theoretical models of drop run-off. In order to predict the overall effect of the hydrophobic surface coatings on water migration through the tank, the movement of water drops through the fuel layer should also be taken into account. Here, we discuss possible interactions between fuel and water drops. We show that very small water drops can float, hanging from the fuel free surface. Drops running down a rigid surface which meet the fuel free surface undergo a transition into the fuel layer that involves detachment from the rigid wall and sometimes the formation of satellite drops.

    Description: Functional analysis of a genome requires accurate gene structure information and a complete gene inventory. A dual experimental strategy was used to verify and correct the initial genome sequence annotation of the reference plant Arabidopsis. Sequencing full-length cDNAs and hybridizations using RNA populations from various tissues to a set of high-density oligonucleotide arrays spanning the entire genome allowed the accurate annotation of thousands of gene structures. We identified 5817 novel transcription units, including a substantial amount of antisense gene transcription, and 40 genes within the genetically defined centromeres.     Description: We use properties of void populations identified in N -body simulations to forecast the ability of upcoming galaxy surveys to differentiate models of f ( R ) gravity from cold dark matter cosmology. We analyse multiple simulation realizations, which were designed to mimic the expected number densities, volumes, and redshifts of the upcoming Euclid satellite and a lower-redshift ground-based counterpart survey, using the public VIDE toolkit. We examine void abundances, ellipicities, radial density profiles, and radial velocity profiles at redshifts 1.0 and 0.43. We find that stronger f ( R ) coupling strengths eliminates small voids and produces voids up to ~20 per cent larger in radius, leading to a significant tilt in the void number function. Additionally, under the influence of modified gravity, voids at all scales tend to be measurably emptier with correspondingly higher compensation walls. The velocity profiles reflect this, showing increased outflows inside voids and increased inflows outside voids. Using the void number function as an example, we forecast that future surveys can constrain the modified gravity coupling strength to ~3  x  10 –5 using voids.
