Summary The possibility of using crude seasalt, and saltpeter as the basis of a culture medium for the blue-green alga Spirulina maxima, was investigated. Saltpeter appears to be an excellent nitrogen and micronutrient-source and is very cheap. The effect of the nutrient level on algal growth, and nitrogen conversion efficiency, was studied. The results suggest the possibility of using this medium in a large-scale algal culture.
