    Notes: Quantum corrections to dc current are calculated in two single-electron devices: turnstile and pump. These corrections set the ultimate limitation on accuracy of these devices as fundamental standards of dc current. A developed approach can be used in principle to analyze macroscopic quantum tunneling of charge in arbitrary single-electronic circuit.

    Notes: We suggest and demonstrate in experiment that two normal metal/insulator/superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions combined in series to form a symmetric SINIS structure can operate as an efficient Peltier refrigerator. Specifically, it is shown that the SINIS structure with normal-state junction resistances 1.0 and 1.1 kΩ is capable of reaching a temperature of about 100 mK starting from 300 mK. We estimate the corresponding cooling power to be 1.5 pW per total junction area of 0.8 μm2 at T=300 mK. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The possibility of processing digital information coded by single electrons on the atomic scale is discussed by analyzing the dynamics of one and two electrons within a simple model structure. Specifically, the probability of passage of an electron within a chain of atomic sites through a potential well, either empty or already occupied by another electron, is investigated both analytically and numerically. It is demonstrated that quantum effects can significantly decrease the reliability of the control that one electron has over the propagation of another. For the structure considered, a few tens of atomic sites and a specific choice of the potential well depth are necessary for reliable control.

    Notes: It is shown that dc I-V curves of the semiconductor superlattices of small (practically, submicron) cross section should exhibit oscillations with the dc voltage period e/C, where C is the capacitance between adjacent conducting layers. These oscillations are due to the single-electron quantization of electric charge of the boundaries of static high-electric-field domains.

    Notes: We have carried out a theoretical analysis of a possibility to generate coherent continuous-wave terahertz radiation using double-quantum-well heterostructures. The lasing should take place due to inversed population of the wells, created by electron flow through the structure under the effect of applied dc voltage. Estimates show that, e.g., 3 THz radiation with a relatively narrow line (Δf/f(approximately-less-than)10−5) and power of the order of 0.1 mW may be generated using structures with area as small as ∼100 μm2, at temperatures up to ∼30 K. For the experimental implementation of this opportunity, a special design is suggested to reduce absorption of terahertz radiation.

    Notes: Abstract A microscopic approach to the theory of small, current-biased tunnel junctions is developed. This approach yields a natural account of the “secondary” quantization of both the single-electron (quasiparticle) and Cooper-pair (Josephson) current components. The theory shows that the current of the single electrons is blocked by their Coulomb interaction at low temperatures within a considerable range of the junction voltage. As a result of the blockade, coherent oscillations of the voltage can arise even in the absence of Josephson coupling, e.g., for single-electron tunneling (SET) between normal metal electrodes. The most significant features of these “SET” oscillations and their coexistence with Bloch oscillations in Josephson junctions are studied in detail. Prospects of experimental verification of the predicted effects and of their possible applications are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The existing theory of correlated single-electron tunneling in the double normalmetal tunnel junction is extended to the case of an ultrasmall central electrode of the structure. It is shown that the form of theI–V curve of such a system depends on the energy relaxation rate in this electrode. For realistic values of the relaxation rate, the large-scale shape of the dcI–V curve, which is associated with Coulomb correlations, is close to that following from the earlier theory. However, theI–V curve should also exhibit small-scale singularities reflecting the structure of the energy spectrum of the central electrode.
