Notes: Conclusions 1. It was established that alumetizing of nickel in an initial medium of AlCl3 and Al proceeds more rapidly than in HCl and Al. The process occurs at a higher rate when the temperature is 1000°C in the upper furnace and 950°C in the lower furnace. 2. In the saturation of nickel by the circulation method it is possible to produce coatings consisting of NiAl, Ni3Al, and the α-solid solution of aluminum in nickel. 3. The oxidation of alumetized samples of nickel in the atmosphere at 1000–1200°C was much lower than that of samples not alumetized. 4. Alumetizing by the circulation method is economical, innocuous, and safe, since it can be conducted in a medium not containing hydrogen.

Notes: Conclusion In studies of reaction diffusion in a series of cases the concentration differential in the chemical compound coating remains unknown, which makes precise determination of the diffusion coefficient impossible. As a comparative characteristic of such processes the author proposes taking the coefficient of the development of the coating and determining the effective activation energy of the process from the temperature dependence of this coefficient.

Notes: Abstract During the chromium plating of carbon steels, a carbide possessing elevated hardness and wear resistance is formed on the surface. It is known that the development of diffusion porosity, which is associated with the different diffusion mobilities of the atoms, is possible in the coatings. Use of carbides as an anti-corrosion protective layer requires its continuity; this is difficult to achieve by chromium plating in accordance with applicable regimes. In the literature, there are virtually no studies in which pore formation processes are addressed as applies to carbide coatings. This paper examines diffusion processes that take place in the surface layers of steel 40Kh during long-term annealing after chromium plating by the circulation method. The composition and properties of the chromium plated layer are studied. Possible mechanisms of pore formation and recommendations for the use of diffusion carbide coatings are proposed.

Notes: Conclusions 1. Thermodynamic calculations were made to determine the possibility of aluminizing steel by the circulation method in an iodide medium on the basis of the disproportionation reaction 2AlI→2/3 AlI3+4/3 Al in the range of 1200–1400°K. 2. Even ductile coatings can be obtained on threaded samples of steel 25Kh1MF aluminized by the circulation method at 1210°K for 5 h. The aluminized coating is retained after oil quenching from 1160°K and tempering at 930°K.

Notes: Abstract The ion-plasma method of depositing refractory coatings makes it possible to treat parts at temperatures of about 200°C. Since these temperatures correspond to aging regimes of heat-treatable high-strength aluminum alloys, it becomes possible to combine the process of deposition of a wear-resistant coating with toughening treatment of them that consists of quenching and aging. The present paper concerns results of a study of the tribotechnical properties and corrosion resistance of titanium nitride coatings deposited by the ion-plasma method on alloys D16, PV90, and 1420.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The maximum density of plasma energy, the qualitative characteristic of which is the specific power of the discharge, provides the greatest thickness of the diffusion layer in saturation from a gas medium at a constant temperature. 2. The dependence of the specific power of the discharge on the pressure of the saturating medium has a maximum in various kinds of ITCT of metals and alloys, i.e., nitriding, carburizing (nitrocarburizing), and siliconizing. 3. The energy characteristic of the glow discharge, i.e., its specific power, should be one of the main factors determining the diffusion saturation in all kinds of ITCT.

Notes: Abstract The creation of a titanium nitride coating on the surface of articles is one of the most effective methods of enhancing the wear resistance of materials. This coating is also promising from the standpoint of the possibility of achieving high hardness, strength, and simultaneously good protective-and-decorative surface properties. We investigated the possibility of improving the tribotechnical characteristics and corrosion resistance of the widely known aluminum alloys PV-90, D16, and 1420 using the titanium nitride coatings applied by the ionplasma method.
