    Description: It is well known that many chlorine and bromine compounds that are inert in the troposphere are destroyed in the stratosphere and contribute to the stratospheric burden of reactive chlorine and bromine species. But the contribution from those chlorine and bromine compounds which are reactive in the troposphere is less certain because it is not known whether convection can transport these gases to the upper troposphere rapidly enough to overcome their short tropospheric lifetimes. We examine this issue using a three-dimensional chemistry and transport model to simulate the evolution of three gases which have surface sources, bromoform (CHBr3), methyl chloroform (CH3CCl3), and carbon dioxide (CO2). Our objective is to determine if CHBr3 might enhance the lower stratospheric burden of reactive bromine. The other two gases provide tests of the quality of the simulation. Both CHBr3 and CH3CCl3 are destroyed in the troposphere by reaction with hydroxyl (OH), whose latitudinal and monthly variation is provided by a two-dimensional model and upon which a diurnal variation is imposed. Comparison of the lifetime of CH3CCl3 computed from observations (5 years) with the lifetime computed from the simulation provides an integrated test of the model's transport and photochemistry. Observations also show that CO2 exhibits a strong seasonal cycle in the northern hemisphere troposphere that is not propagated directly across the tropopause into the lower stratosphere. Thus, maintenance of the observed troposphere-stratosphere distinctness of CO2 in the presence of convection is a critical benchmark for meeting our objective.

Yet the processes by which students become more capable and ready to meet the challenges of writing for employers, the wider public, and their own purposes remain largely invisible. Developing Writers in Higher Education shows how learning to write for various purposes in multiple disciplines leads college students to new levels of competence. This volume draws on an in-depth study of the writing and experiences of 169 University of Michigan undergraduates, using statistical analysis of 322 surveys, qualitative analysis of 131 interviews, use of corpus linguistics on 94 electronic portfolios and 2,406 pieces of student writing, and case studies of individual students to trace the multiple paths taken by student writers. Topics include student writers' interaction with feedback; perceptions of genre; the role of disciplinary writing; generality and certainty in student writing; students' concepts of voice and style; students' understanding of multimodal and digital writing; high school's influence on college writers; and writing development after college. The digital edition offers samples of student writing, electronic portfolios produced by student writers, transcripts of interviews with students, and explanations of some of the analysis conducted by the contributors. This is an important book for researchers and graduate students in multiple fields. Those in writing studies get an overview of other longitudinal studies as well as key questions currently circulating. For linguists, it demonstrates how corpus linguistics can inform writing studies. Scholars in higher education will gain a new perspective on college student development. The book also adds to current understandings of sociocultural theories of literacy and offers prospective teachers insights into how students learn to write. Finally, for high school teachers, this volume will answer questions about college writing.

    Notes: Abstract Electrokinetic forces are emerging as a powerful means to drive microfluidic systems with flow channel cross-sectional dimensions in the tens of micrometers and flow rates in the nanoliter per second range. These systems provide many advantages such as improved analysis speed, improved reproducibility, greatly reduced reagent consumption, and the ability to perform multiple operations in an integrated fashion. Planar microfabrication methods are used to make these analysis chips in materials such as glass or polymers. Many applications of this technology have been demonstrated, such as DNA separations, enzyme assays, immunoassays, and PCR amplification integrated with microfluidic assays. Further development of this technology is expected to yield higher levels of functionality of sample throughput on a single microfluidic analysis chip.

    Notes: Thin-film thermocouples were produced on flexible polymeric and paper substrates using evaporation techniques. These devices were found to be simple to produce, durable, and to have good temperature sensitivity. These devices allow the temperature and thermal conductivity of thin coatings to be determined in a variety of processes with minimal impact to the process or loss of heat through the leads.

    Notes: The shapes and motion of immiscible bubbles in a Hele–Shaw cell driven by the motion of the surrounding fluid were studied. Six classes of steady shapes, some of which are remarkable, were observed. Multiple steady states exist over some ranges of parameters and the shape as a function of speed may slow hysteresis. The observed translational velocities do not agree with available theory, but some of the shapes are in qualitative agreement with those computed by Tanveer [Phys. Fluids 29, 3537 (1986)].
