Notes: [Auszug] Fig. 1. Phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance spectrum of poly-crystalline phosphorus pentachloride rotated at high speed. The resonance frequency of the reference compound (85 per cent aqueous phosphoric acid) is also indicated; this frequency was determined from recordings taken immediately beforehand ...

Notes: [Auszug] NUCLEAR magnetic resonance (NMR), a branch of spectroscopy in the radio region of the electromagnetic spectrum, is well established as an analytical and structural technique in chemistry and physics. In the past decade it has become important in medicine also, in providing in vivo anatomical images ...

Notes: [Auszug] IT is just 50 years since Gorter's first attempt to detect nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and 40 years since its successful detection in bulk matter by Bloch and Purcell and their respective colleagues. Over the years NMR progressed from being a valuable method of investigation in physics to ...

Notes: [Auszug] Since this explanation requires the existence of side-spectra which are too weak in intensity normally to be seen, it seemed desirable to devise an experiment which would render them observable. If all the molecules in a solid were to rotate with the same uniform frequency, the side-spectra would ...

Notes: [Auszug] We have extended our experiments on a rotating crystal of sodium chloride to cover a range of angles a from 50 to 100. The axis of rotation was [001]. The measured width of the central line of the sodium-23 resonance spectrum determined between derivative maximum and minimum is plotted in Fig. 1. ...

Notes: Abstract In this study we present an orthogonal magnetic field gradient system for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) microimaging applications. The construction details are given for a prototype assembly for proton microscopy inside a 50-mm vertical bore magnet, which is designed to fit into a commercial 300-MHz NMR probe. This system has been used to acquire images of the human spinal cordin vitro. Its performance has been evaluated and compared to that predicted by computer simulation.

Notes: Abstract The author notes a concentration of recent NMR-related anniversaries, including the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Green (1793) in Nottingham, the 150th anniversary of the birth of Boltzmann (1844), the 50th anniversary of the discovery of EPR by Zavoisky (1944), the 50th anniversary of the discovery of NMR (1945–1946). He describes how 30 years ago (1963) he introduced NMR to the Physics Department of Nottingham University, where he was joined by P. S. Allen, S. Clough, W. Derbyshire, and P. Mansfield, who over a 20-year period founded a highly successful school of NMR research. He emphasizes the need to explain NMR applications in a comprehensible manner to the general public and he looks forward to new future developments of NMR in medicine.

Notes: Abstract Measurements have been made of the longitudinal relaxation timeT 1 of31P for the individual resonances of the metabolites AMP, ADP, ATP, Pir and PCr (phosphocreatine) in H2O and D2O solutions from 5 to 60°C at various concentrations and at frequencies of 40 MHz (2.3 T) and 120 MHz (7 T). The contributions of dipolar, chemical shift anisotropy, and spin-rotation mechanisms have been separated, and activation parameters of the underlying molecular reorientations have been determined.
