    Description: Air pollution started to become a problem for human beings with the industrial revolution, but nowadays, with the introduction of laws against emissions (e.g., the EuroX normative), the situa- tion is getting better. Moreover, governments must constantly monitor pollution levels to check policies effects. This article describes a method to verify traffic ban effect claims on air pollution using monitored data. In Lombardia (our region), ARPA (the local EPA) maintains pollution monitoring stations from down- town Milano to remote places near the mountains since 1999. Measured data are “somewhat” available through ARPA’s website. “Somewhat” because a CAPTCHA protected download request form must be filled up for every combination of (station, pollutant, time-frame 〈 1 yr). In 2003 the Lombardia government introduced a vehicle ban to reduce air pollution. Then, more recently (in 2008 and 2012) the Milano City Council introduced a stricter ban. The author implemented an automated (in place since 2004) data collecting “web gatherer” to overcome ARPA’s overcomplicated download procedure and, above all, to verify air pollution reduction claims . Data are published on the author’s website and this paper presents a method to analyse effects on air pollution and to verify policies claims.

Risponderemo a queste ed altre domande rivolgendoci a chi inizia a rendersi conto che la piena consapevolezza sugli aspetti tecnologici sottostanti i processi sociali, politici ed economici è importante. Ci aggrapperemo a questa consapevolezza costruendo un quadro, pur a tratti tecnico, delle tecnologie connesse alla Cittadinanza Digitale. I nostri lettori ideali sono in particolare gli studenti, gli attivisti politici, gli accademici, gli amministratori pubblici, i policy makers, i professionisti delle tecnologie (ad esempio gli sviluppatori) e i politici, categorie che tradizionalmente ricoprono ruoli di “influenza” sociale, politica e tecnologica e che quindi potrebbero e dovrebbero indirizzare la società verso il bene comune.

    Description: L’esplosione del mercato legato alla telefonia mobile, all’automazione, la domotica, ai sistemi di infotainment e guida automatica, alla progettazione di droni e stampanti 3D hanno portato alla ribalta l’interesse per le tecnologie “embedded”. Negli ultimi anni vi è stato un progressivo aumento nella domanda di competenze in questo settore, sia in ambito professionale/industriale sia per le comunità di appassionati e principianti. Questo testo offre un percorso didattico per coloro che hanno già competenze informatiche di base e vogliono iniziare un percorso multidisciplinare di introduzione ai sistemi embedded. Si inizia con le conoscenze basilari di elettronica ed hardware per poi passare alle nozioni per muovere i primi passi dal punto di vista del software, in modo semplice, pratico e sintetico.

    Description: Conscious and functional use of online social spaces can support the elderly with mind cognitive impairment (MCI) in their daily routine, not only for systematic monitoring, but to achieve effective targeted engagement. In this sense, although social involvement can be obtained when elder’s experiences, interests, and goals are shared and accepted by the community, an important subsistence for aging depends on the compelling information, users’ co-operation, and resource reliability. Unfortunately, applications aimed at optimizing the information content and the reliability of online users are still missing. Within the SystEm of Nudge theory-based ICT applications for OldeR citizens (SENIOR) project, an advanced social platform will be created in which the elderly with MCI will be involved in “optimized” social communities, where suggestions for general well-being will be recognized as useful by users and shared by care providers. We report the results of our study addressing this issue from a theoretical perspective: we propose a computational problem and a heuristic solution where “expert users” can engage and support the elderly by suggesting available services and facilities for their conditions. The numerical experiments on synthetic data are of interest when considering large communities, which is the most natural situation for online social spaces.

    Description: In the present work, a remediation bioprocess based on the use of a native isolate of Chlorella vulgaris immobilized in an alginate matrix inside a polylactic acid (PLA) device is proposed. This microalga immobilized in alginate beads was previously shown to be useful for the reduction of several chemical and microbial contaminants present in the highly polluted water from the Matanza–Riachuelo watershed. However, these beads had a relatively short shelf life in the natural environment. To overcome this limitation, a 3D-printed PLA device was designed. PLA is a biocompatible and biodegradable material suitable for biotechnological applications. We used Erlenmeyers and stirred-tank bioreactors fed batch with Murashige Skoog (MS) culture medium or water from the Cildáñez stream (one of the water bodies of the aforementioned watershed) to estimate the growth kinetics parameters and the bioremediation capacity of immobilized-microalgal cells as an unconfined system (UcS) or a confined system (CfS) inside PLA devices on Cildáñez water. Although alga’s growth parameters were maximum in the UcS fed with MS medium as substrate, successful bioremediation of the target water was possible using the CfS: all inorganic nitrogen forms and total phosphorus were reduced at least by 90% after 5 days of bioprocess in an agitated bioreactor, whereas aerobic mesophilic bacteria decreased by about 85%. The number of coliforms also decreased. Standardized cytotoxicity tests using Allium cepa seeds carried out to prove the effectiveness of the bioremediation process, confirmed the high degree of decontamination achieved by the use of immobilized microalga confined in a 3D-printable PLA-device.
