    Description: Acoustic tone burst spectroscopy is used to examine the effect of plastic deformation on higher order elastic properties of specimens of AISI 1016, 1045, 1095 and 8620 steel rods by measuring the stress acoustic constants (SACs). The SAC is found to be influenced by prestraining, and prestrain SAC measurements on 8620 steel demonstrate similar behavior to previously measured steels even though the composition of 8620 steel is significantly different. It is suggested from bias stress measurements that the stress acoustic response of prestrained 8620 steel is sensitive to the sign of the applied stress due to the different directions is which dislocations move under tension as opposed to compression, providing an approach to nondestructive testing of residual stress in steels.

    Description: The effect of texture on the general stress measurements of a heavily cold rolled steel plate is analyzed. Changes in the acoustic natural velocity for plate samples with their long axes perpendicular, parallel, and in a 40 degree direction with respect to the rolling axis were measured; graphs of the velocity variations for the three samples are provided. It is observed that the negative minimum change in the acoustic natural velocity under residual compression for the perpendicular sample is about half that of the parallel and 40 degree samples indicating that the functional form of the velocity curve is influenced by the structural properties of the sample; however, the stress measurements are unaffected by the texture.

    Description: Much of the recent development of the magnetoacoustic technique has been devoted to refine this technique as a reliable and practical tool for measuring bulk residual stress in steel components. For this, the effects of structural and metallurgical properties on the magnetoacoustic interaction have been studied for various types of steel samples. Also, progress is being made to obtain quantitative residual stress measurements in railroad wheels. This paper reviews the physical basis and the experimental results of the magnetoacoustic stress measurements in steels.

    Description: Achieving accurate preload in threaded fasteners is an important and often critical problem which is encountered in nearly all sectors of government and industry. Conventional tensioning methods which rely on torque carry with them the disadvantage of requiring constant friction in the fastener in order to accurately correlate torque to preload. Since most of the applied torque typically overcomes friction rather than tensioning the fastener, small variations in friction can cause large variations in preload. An instrument called a pulsed phase locked loop interferometer, which was recently developed at NASA Langley, has found widespread use for measurement of stress as well as material properties. When used to measure bolt preload, this system detects changes in the fastener length and sound velocity which are independent of friction. The system is therefore capable of accurately establishing the correct change in bolt tension. This high resolution instrument has been used for precision measurement of preload in critical fasteners for numerous applications such as the space shuttle landing gear and helicopter main rotors.

    Description: Uniaxial stress effects on the low-field magnetoacoustic interaction have been studied using bulk compressional waves and Rayleigh surface waves in numerous steel samples having various impurity concentrations (Namkung et al., 1984). The results invariably showed that the initial slope of acoustic natural velocity variations, with respect to net induced magnetization parallel to the stress axis, is positive under tension and negative under compression. The results of current measurements in railroad rail steel having about 0.68 wt percent carbon content are typical for medium range carbon steels. The low-field natural velocity slope in this particular type of steel, which is almost zero when unstressed, becomes steeper with increased magnitude of stress in both directions. Hence, the nondestructive determination of the sign of residual stress in railroad wheels and rails is possible using this technique. This paper discusses the basic physical mechanism underlying the experimental observations and presents the results obtained in railroad rail steel.

    Description: The behavior of higher order elastic properties, which are much more sensitive to material state than are second order properties, has been studied for steel alloys AISI 1016, 1045, 1095, and 8620 by measuring the stress derivative of the acoustic natural velocity to determine the stress acoustic constants (SAC's). Results of these tests show a 20 percent linear variation of SAC's with carbon content as well as even larger variations with prestrain (plastic deformation). The use of higher order elastic characterization permits quantitative evaluation of solids and may prove useful in studies of fatigue and fracture.

    Description: NASA is applying considerable effort on the development of sensor technology for structural health monitoring (SHM). This research is targeted toward increasing the safety and reliability of aerospace vehicles, while reducing operating and maintenance costs. Research programs are focused on applications to both aircraft and space vehicles. Sensor technologies under development span a wide range including fiber-optic sensing, active and passive acoustic sensors, electromagnetic sensors, wireless sensing systems, MEMS, and nanosensors. Because of their numerous advantages for aerospace applications, fiber-optic sensors are one of the leading candidates and are the major focus of this presentation. In addition, recent advances in active and passive acoustic sensing will also be discussed.

    Description: The pulsed phase-locked-loop bolt monitor (P2L2) that uses ultrasonic waves to measure bolt preload with accuracies ranging from 1 to 3 percent (depending on the specific bolt) is described. To remeasure bolt load after installation, a thermal calibration factor compensates for bolt temperature changes, and a standard reference block allows correction for acoustic phase errors due to measurement equipment configuration such as utilization of a different transducer, couplant, or cable. Some examples of critical applications including Space Shuttle landing-gear wheels and NASA wind-tunnel fan blades are discussed.

    Description: Structural Health Management (SHM) will be of critical importance to provide the safety, reliability and affordability necessary for the future long duration space missions described in America's Vision for Space Exploration. Long duration missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond cannot be accomplished with the current paradigm of periodic, ground based structural integrity inspections. As evidenced by the Columbia tragedy, this approach is also inadequate for the current Shuttle fleet, thus leading to its initial implementation of on-board SHM sensing for impact detection as part of the return to flight effort. However, future space systems, to include both vehicles as well as structures such as habitation modules, will require an integrated array of onboard in-situ sensing systems. In addition, advanced data systems architectures will be necessary to communicate, store and process massive amounts of SHM data from large numbers of diverse sensors. Further, improved structural analysis and design algorithms will be necessary to incorporate SHM sensing into the design and construction of aerospace structures, as well as to fully utilize these sensing systems to provide both diagnosis and prognosis of structural integrity. Ultimately, structural integrity information will feed into an Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) system that will provide real-time knowledge of structural, propulsion, thermal protection and other critical systems for optimal vehicle management and mission control. This paper will provide an overview of NASA research and development in the area of SHM as well as to highlight areas of technology improvement necessary to meet these future mission requirements.
